A young cellist named Johannes Moser. I'm not sure if he's well known, but he seems to have worked with some renowned conductors and orchestras (e.g. Berliner Philharmoniker). The orchestra was the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, conducted by Tugan Sokhiev.

Ah, I didn't really expect anyone to know this piece. I should have known better. So you probably can imagine how intense a live performance of it could be. And how loud.

Sage advice. Thank you again. I see that Grout book is still on print. I may give that a shot as well as taking a look at your other suggestions. Much appreciated.

§1 No one needs records. But most of us want them. ;)

§2 I don't consider mixed reviews a problem. Although it's clearer if Gramophone, FonoForum, Andrew Clements of The Guardian, and BBC Music Magazine (and few other instances) agree on something. One just has to understand, that all the critics both have their cultural backgrounds and have personal preferences. As long as the critics are journalistically logical, it's possible to abstract from their reviews their aesthetic basic principles. It's possible then to interpret how oneself would react on the "stimuli" they've faced. So it's easier to filter out what's essential and what's non-essential for oneself.

Time for some Mozart in the morning. This fine set fits the bill perfectly!

No - but in this case I have about 10 cycles, plus a number of individual recordings. Unless commentary suggests a new cycle is going to knock my socks off I would rather spend my money on filling holes in my collection or (noting your avatar) the phenomenal MFSL Sinatra SACDs that were just released.

Listened to Bruckner's Second last night - and the first movement 2 1/2 times (Wand and Jochum). I don't get it. Bruckner is an acquired taste for me in any event, but I am not convinced this one is worth the effort. I listened to the first movement of the 3rd on my way to work this morning (Jochum) and was much more engaged.

You might find the 4th onwards more engaging still.

Pretty good sound on this BIS disc from 2011. It is the not often heard 1st and 2nd Symphonies of Kalinnikov who died at 34.

Herreweghe is still much better known for his Bach. Alas, every HIP conductor except Leonhardt that started out with Bach ended up with Beethoven since they all eventually ran out of Bach to record. LOL

Now playing the following CD, which arrived yesterday for a first listen. Hey, it still has a Virgin Classics logo, not the misleading Erato logo as shown in this image ... :righton:

Yeah, but you got to admit that Harnoncourt turned out a pretty great at Beethoven and Bruckner.

Songs of the Auvergne - Natania Davrath Vol 1. What a lovely recording, I believe her grandmother lived in the area so the dialect is correct.
This is an Analogue Productions recording, but I all so have an original Vanguard of Vol 2. well worth looking out for.

I really like his 1st Symphony. The way he uses the themes in the final movement is brilliant.

Just a follow on to my last post. I know this is a classical thread, but I followed the above Vanguards with the Joan Baez Live recordings from the same company they are superb.

I have that K516 as part of a boxed set of the 6 quintets. Oddly, I don't believe I have any recording of K563.
