I was about to start a poll when I thought of this topice, but realised how it would limit people's options. Personally Paul McCartney is mine. He can sing every style convincingly. From blues to pop to hard rock, and even country. I admire others greatly like Frank Sinatra, Justin Timberlake, Neil Tennent (Pet Shop Boys) and Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend). Who is yours and why?

Immediate reaction was Sammy Davis Jr. I have no idea why, just pure entertainment to me.

Great answers, forgot about them. Yeah I know it's extremely difficult. When I opted to pick McCartney I felt he was the one who conveyed the most diverse emotions, for me.

Why George Jones ?....he does more with a single word than Ella Fitzgerald with the entire American Songbook,no offense to Ella.

That's a toughie. Probably Kate Bush, with Sandy Denny running a close second. Can't think of any male singers who quite do it for me in the same way. Johnny Cash perhaps. The Beatles or Beach Boys in harmony maybe but not necessarily individual voices from those bands.

    Oh, I forgot Tim Buckley.

Yeah, that's a hard one. Once upon a time it would have been Dylan. Such fantastic phrasing and passion. These last 10 years not so much. Otis Redding is one that comes to mind. What a tragedy he died so young. So many others though...

    Roger Daltrey in his prime
    Jack Bruce circa 72-74
    Neil Young
    Elvis
    Aretha
Salief Kieta - one of the great African voices

I love Emmylou Harris' voice but perhaps not the greatest...

Hey yeah I forgot Dylan. As Dave Marsh once said, he demonstrated the difference between the great voice and the great rock-n-roll voice.

My favorite singer is Peggy Lee, she had it all ''vocal ability, charisma, style, sex appeal'', i'm sure i'm missing a few attributes.

One of her's that the Beatles covered.

Here she covers ''A Hard Day's Night''.

Elvis Presley: Raw, tender, volume, range, feeling: Yes he had it all (except for the right songs everytime...)- But Elvis is one of the few who could turn a piece of crap into gold, and that ainĀ“t bad.
