Over at the Hirez Central website there is an article noting that Pono players were to be shipped out by the end of October. Now that October has come and gone with no players shipped to actual backers it raises some concern over Pono in general. When I asked the Pono site people this week when the store would be open and out of Beta-they replied back "At The same time the first players ship-end of October" .Not looking too good at this point for Pono IMHO....

This is a new company, they didn't expect so much pre-orders, they don't want to rush things because they wanna do things right and don't want people to fall on their back should they make a mistake because of too much hurry.
All good reasons to explain the little delay in shipping.

I've waited 44 years for something like Pono to arrive. I can wait a few more weeks. Especially if that's what is needed to make things right.

You must be quite a visionary to be thinking about a high resolution audio player with 128 GB of capacity in 1970, 9 years before the Walkman was even introduced and 11 years before the first PC.

Received my Pono on Friday and would like to state that this is a game changer. Played the included Deja Vu album and was blown away. This is the definitive version and the CD and vinyl pales in comparison.

What is so different about this that makes it a game changer? Hi-res masterings are not new. Physical device to store and play said files, not new. What's the game changer?

I am also reading that the Pono is a no no when it comes to gapless playback? My NY LE player is still in pieces at the Pono factory apparently, waiting for a shipping email so cannot confirm. Perhaps you can comment?

    Thanks

    No gapless = fail
    Toblerone fugliness = fail
No WiFi so no internet or streaming = fail
    No EQ options = fail
Only 1-2% of Pono music store actually being hi-res = fail (from one perspective)
Hi-res being the marketing hook and hi-res making no difference to how music sounds = fail
    Those cheesy videos = fail

Looking for some wins here guys, any ideas?

More details, and piccies please! I wouldn't want some actual signal to get lost in the usual noise.

yup, the word "game changer" immediately springs to mind, but not in the positive sense in which it's typically applied.

This unboxing video fills me with a mixture of envy and pity: the packaging is nice and for all I know the player itself is great but that leatherette pouch is just horrible and as a gadget it hardly counts as a small object of desire:

I found this one even more painful than the unboxing vid:

Absolutely agree! It was hard to stop listening to Deja Vu - it was as if I was hearing it for the first time!

I quite like the way that the double-click brings up file specification, but - other than that - I'm struck by how unappealing this player is. Also, the fact that the maker of that video has been using Bose earbuds says something ... I've owned those earbuds myself and they have advantages in some contexts but they are not going to make the most of high res files.

There's too much danger of confirmation bias in this thread though. Everyone in this thread who didn't preorder a Pono runs the risk of being just a little too keen to notice the bad.
