I'm going through a crush course on everything Daptone these past week. So far i'm addicted to Daptone Gold, Naturally by SS and the Dap Kings and CB No Time for Dreaming. Can someone recommend the best releases on Daptone and if the vinyl SQ is good?
If you love the Charles Bradley albums, look for the first album released as instrumentals. I was hoping they would do the same for the 2nd but have never seen it.
Grab the Daptone Gold sampler. Four sides of soul. All killer, no filler. https://daptonerecords.com/shop/Music/LP's?product_id=60
Thats the one i think i'm gonna get right know. This music i think is best served as a VA compilation. For example i like Soul Jazz Records because their killer compilations.
III and their latest Burnt Offering are fantastic. Also, do NOT miss a chance to see these guys live. Great show.
Sharon Jones' I Learned The Hard Way. There's a 12-disc box set of 7" 45s, one for each track paired with its instrumental version.
Their album releases are few; currently they are at #34, and that includes reissues from Desco catalog. However to collect their 7" singles would be a challenge today.
Yeah Its great. I had a listen to the follow up and it seemed to be very "lover man" soul. I don't know if that's really for him.
It might be hard physically, but they have a couple of comps out on iTunes that collects a good portion of them. Vol. 1 https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/daptone-7-inch-singles-collection/id189616925 Vol. 2 https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/daptone-7-inch-singles-collection/id280549128
Daptone is a great label with a great sound. You should look into Desco Records, which preceded Daptone and has some great nasty funk - i.e. appropriately lower production values. Find the Spike's Choice comps if you can, and sample early Sharon Jones, Sugarman 3 and some other great acts.
I've just ordered it from a german seller on Ebay who doesn't charge shipping costs to Peru at 17 euros. Pretty good deal i think.
I wanna bump this thread for more suggestions ... this label is so fantastic I'll probably go all-in, but anyone have a list of essentials? So far I have mostly instrumental stuff, Budos Band III and Burnt Offering, The Crossing by Menehan Street Band, self titled Antibalas and Who is This America? and the Daptone Gold Vol. 2 sampler.
I've got this the first Charles Bradley, two of The Budos Band and Menahan Street Band and three of the Sharon Jones. All stellar soul/funk.
I tend to feel like the songwriting is a few steps behind everything else: the talent, the performances, the production, the arrangements, etc. We sort of forget that while Aretha & Otis wrote a bunch of great songs, their albums were always padded out with others', which I suppose at the time was preferable to original material filler. It was a different time, and I'm glad Daptone and others are putting new tunes out in the world, but I've always wanted to see Sharon Jones or Charles Bradley do an album of covers of post-60's tunes, done in their style. Imagine the Dap-Kings doing Prince tunes as if they were written in 1966. I love old R&B so much, but my love of it drops off immensely once it became dominated by synths and drum machines. I know there's decades of probably great songs that I never really noticed because the production was a turn-off, and it'd be a fascinating diversion if one of these bands did a project like this. Really looking forward to seeing Charles Bradley this weekend.
