Continuing through the Decca Analog box. Oistrakh performing Bruch (Scottish Fantasy) and Hindemith (violin concerto - new to me).

By the way, someone told me yesterday that when Alice Tully Hall (the chamber music hall at Lincoln Center) opened its doors the inaugural performance was by Oistrakh and Richter. That's one I wish I had snuck into.

Elizabeth Wilcock and Simon Standage were the leading violinists on the English Concert in its golden days when Trevor Pinnock was its director. Monica Huggett and Catherine Mackintosh were their counterpart on the Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood. Both HIP ensembles were at their pinnacle in the mid 80's ...

I have to be in the right mood for Mahler. I guess I am today.

EDIT - I just switched over to headphones. This CD might have too much dynamic range!

Speaking of Mahler, look at the LP shelf, see that I have a 1970's Columbia pressing of Mahler's First Symphony, Bernstein, NYPO. The Library of Congress number on the back indicates a 1967 issue date. I suspect this is from the same run of pressings that appeared in the budget boxes from the Seventies, my introduction to this work. I've heard many since. I suspect that if I were to hear this on a better mastered anything, I could love it. Unfortunately, this copy suffers from the one-two punch of jacked-up treble—Columbia's usual M.O. for reissues of older recordings in the 1970's—and being just off-center enough to spoil the finale. I've got a stack of LPs destined for the thrift store. Knowing Columbia's track record, that's where my copy eventually landed. I'm going to assume there's no audiophile masterings of this on LP. So what are my options in digital form?

And a single-layer SACD, though that's not a real issue for me. Anyone heard this mastering?
Yes. I have the Beethoven Symphonies 2 & 7 in that series. That CD has a decent transfer, if not exactly stellar.

The Neville Marriner "The Argo Years" 28 disc box set is on sale over at AmazonUK for a steal at 42.01 GBP, which when all said and done
for American orders, gets reduced to 38 GBP = somewhere around $61 and change. This is a steal for I've seen this at Amazon US and
elsewhere for $100 and much more...

It's still 42.01 GBP at AmazonUK and $156 at Amazon.com (USA). AmazonUK has a lot of killer box set prices periodically if you can catch them vs AmazonUSA
and a lot of other retailers...

I assume you are looking for a single disc - not the cycle, as in the Carnegie Hall box. The box goes for about $35.

It's another great Russian box from Brilliant Classics. I keep mine next to each other on the shelf:

I only have the boxes by Gilels, Richter and Berman. The box by Yudina is now very pricey ...

Yeah, I saw that. Brillant Classics is picky about what it keeps in print.
