I have a Super nice UHQR of "Dark Side Of The Moon'' that I'll trade for a Beatles mono box.
    Any takers?? :shtiphat:

Not an LP, but my half speed mastered CD of "Switched on Bach" by Wendy Carlos sounds grand.

Many people don't seem to know that the original ordinary pressing of Frank Zappa's "Joe's Garage" has been half-speed mastered (except for the Canadian issue). Especially Vol. 1 is one of the best sounding LPs I ever heard.

  4. Can anyone comment on the sound quality of Tom Petty 'Hard Promises' 1/2 speed Masterphile pressing?

  5. Bi-annual bump.

What does Stan Ricker's SR/2 in the deadwax mean?
I see this on some of my best sounding records.
Does this refer to 1/2 speed mastering?
    If not, why the "2"?

So why does Steve refer to 1/2 speed mastering as bunk?
    Elo - Discovery
Fantastic record. I'm referring to the original pressing, not the later "audiophile" pressing.

Tchaikovsky - 1812 on Telarc, one pressing is Stan's, one is not.
    Stan's is fantastic.
Steve has mentioned this lp in the past as a good example of a digital recording mastered to vinyl. And it is, indeed, mind blowing.

I don't think you can make an across the board statement about all half speed mastered vinyl.

    What's up with that?
    Hello - Steve?

I vote for Gino Vanelli Powerful People. Many dismiss this because they hate Gino's music but this is awesome sound and performance.

I think John Klemmer Touch was a success.
Earl Klugh Finger Paintings is even better

Hi all new here due to a search regarding half speed mastering, the thread I found was 10 best half speed mastered vinyl, only to find the thread closed. Reading that thread, supertramp crime of the century was chosen by several people. My mfsl copy is absolutely fantastic, better than cd or streamed. Fleetwood Mac rumours I was slightly disappointed, although I have only heard it streamed I expected more but don't get me wrong it's very good, just not as magical as the supertramp album. I have others too. I agree with some that not all half speed mastered vinyl is better. I am of the opinion that 180 grm is nothing special and some are poorly pressed.

I have the MFSL, 2 early UK copies and the Speakers Corner of Crime of the Century.

    I’d rank them:
    1a) Early UK
    1b) Speakers Corner

    4) MFSL

1a & 1b sound good but in different ways. The MFSL isn’t terrible, but it’s typical of the MFSL’s of the era. But it should be better than the digital remasters - which I assume is what you’re hearing on CD/streaming. [Correction: the most recent remaster is supposed to be decent. It’s the earlier remasters that are awful].

P.S. I’d never seen this thread before until now. When I read some of the 1/2 speeds I have or have heard mentioned as among the 10 best sounding 1/2 speeds, it makes me glad I haven’t heard the average ones...

Thanks for sharing this marcb. It's the first I've read of anyone placing the MFSL under the UK or Speakers Corner.
Haven't heard the MFSL vinyl, but love the US A&M vinyl, and US cd, and MFSL cd above all.
And I looked at your system - which blows mine away.
Shaking up the apple cart, eh?

I would say if you do a search here the general consensus is closer to my ears than what you’ve heard about the MFSL vinyl.

I’ve never heard the MFSL CD, but opinions I respect seem to like it.

Thanks for that. Although I don't recall the Speakers Corner reissue beating out the MFSL here. Food for thought.

I didn't realize anyone rated the MoFi higher than the UK......the MoFi is a nice/fun spin on awesome vinyl, I'll give it that!

While we're on the subject of Nautilus,
Elton John - Greatest Hits, Nautilus pressing.
Do not confuse this with Direct Disc Lab's Super Disc pressings! Totally different. This is Nautilus. Who also pressed the highly sought after Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here lp.

I bought this on the recommendation of the old TAS Super Disc list and it's incredible.
As Harry Pearson described, the cymbals have a silky quality unlike any other pressing.
This was before the DCC vinyl remaster was released.
I have the DCC cd remaster, and it's one of their (I mean Steve's) best.
Would love to compare those two vinyl pressings, though.

Not a good sounding LP. Shrill highs with lack of bass.

I've said this in all half speed threads: MFSL Gino Vanelli, Poweful People. It's an under appreciated gem. The sound is to die for IMO.
