Star Wars: Rogue One Will Take Place Before The Original Trilogy, Synopsis Revealed

    Jake VyperApril 19, 2015 19:42 PM

At Star Wars Celebration Anaheim on Sunday, Lucasfilm brought Godzilla director Gareth Edwards to talk about his upcoming standalone film Star Wars: Rogue One. Josh Trank was scheduled to be on the panel but didn't make it .

Head of the story group Kiri Hart announced that the stand-alone films will be officially referred to as "Star Wars Anthology Films."

Then Gareth Edwards joined the panel and admitted to crying during the trailer reveal for The Force Awakens.

A teaser was revealed: December 2016. Obi-Wan Kenobi's voiceover, as portrayed by Sir Alec Guinnes, ran over the trailer. "For more than a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were the guardians of peace and justice in the old republic." "Before the dark times." A forested planet appears, a TIE fighter flies by, and in the background, the Death Star is seen. A loud scared chatter over a com, then the logo: Rogue One: Star Wars Anthology

Here's the official synopsis for the film:

A rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a mission to steal the Death Star plans and bring a new hope to the galaxy." Edwards confirmed that it takes place after Episode III, before Episode IV, and "closer to Episode IV.

Edwards said that the film will not feature the Jedi - their absence is a part of the narrative, and that the idea of a regular group of people without supernatural powers trying to better their universe is what's interesting.

Star Wars: Rogue One is set to release on December 16, 2016. We'll keep you updated aboutStar Wars: Rogue One, so stay tuned.

They're really into these big epic shots of technology from the original trilogy.

I hope that they keep the costumes and technology in line with the original trilogy and don't try pretty it up like they did in the prequels.

That's awesome, can't believe they dropped the Rogue One "teaser" this weekend too. Yikes!!

The cynic in me hopes that Disney will retcon these 'anthology' movies as the prequels. Won't happen, I know.

I hope they tie in events of Star Wars Rebels into the film too. Speaking of Star Wars Rebels, here is the Season 2 trailer which shows Darth Vader as intimidating than ever before plus the return of Captain Rex and a grown up Ahsoka Tano from the Clone Wars. Back to the film though, wonder if Rogue One will feature Bail Organa and a young Princess Leia.

Someone at Disney should have James Earl Jones locked in a booth and recording him as he recites every single word in the English lexicon. If they have the voice, they have Vader, and they can milk that cow for all he's worth long after Mr. Jones has parted this mortal plane.

When all is sad and done we will have more Star Wars than we'll even know what to do with. I'm not sure all of it will be worth viewing.

That's not cynical, that's optimistic. It would allow for what a friend suggested once about the prequel trilogy: that Darth Vader should have been a peripheral character, and the story should have been about the Old Republic Lucas hinted at in the original Star Wars.

Based on this (the teaser they showed at the Celebration), something like this may be likely.

I'm curious to know whether Princess Leia and Darth Vader are characters in this film. She's the one they stole the plans for, after all.

Also, let's hope they don't ignore those late 70's sideburns that were all the rage in a galaxy far, far away.

Didn't that happen in the Prequels? Darth Vader shows up in the last five minutes of Episode III? That's pretty much on the periphery. The rest of the series did focus on the fall of the Galactic Republic (they didn't know it was the "Old" Republic at the time, not until the Emperor arrived on the scene.)

Read online yesterday that Tom Baker (Doctor Who #4) maybe doing voice work in one of the forthcoming Star Wars projects.

Darth Vader in his black suit only appears in the last five minutes, but Darth Vader the person, ie Anakin Skywalker, is a main character in all three films.

Yes, I know that. Are you saying you think the Prequels shouldn't have focused on Anakin/Vader at all, relegating him to a background character? Because then it'd be harder to establish the father/son through-line with Luke in the OT.

*I* wasn't, but when someone else said "he should have been a peripheral character" you replied that he only shows up in the last five minutes, which is only true if you're talking about the costume.

Makes sense. He's got a very James Earl Jones-y characterful type voice.

Well, Anakin gets named Darth Vader about halfway though Revenge of the Sith, but that's in private. He makes his "public debut" when he slaughters the Separtists on Mustafar a short time later-- still on the periphery of the storyline over the course of the three films.
