Yes. Overall, though, Norrington's cycle is not that highly regarded: some scrappy playing and really harsh tone from that particular period ensemble.

Overall, I myself find Gardiner's cycle the best for HIP performances. Mind you, even Gardiner does not always observe the metronome markings, which are really insanely fast in some cases.

Bought that set earlier this year. So far only one listen. (But I had it on vinyl eons ago.)

Picked up in someone's garage. Von Karajan 1964 DG vinyl. First time I've heard Brahms' first and I'm impressed.

Nicely done. You tamed the DGG stridency.

How is the remaster? I like my analog originals in the rock world.

Thank you. That was my main purpose, many of these 60's-70's DG recordings need this kind of fixing, and I like the results.

It sounds more or less like the 2nd that I've posted.

Yes but playing great recordings through a computer is never ideal. Thanks.

It depends on your soundcard... (though of course youtube is not the ideal source)

I've held off buying the Karajan Bruckner box due to some comments around the 'net concerning its need for remastering.

It's not that bad, at least the 5th 7th and 8th which I've heard - very fine sounding recordings (especially the 8th which is demonstration quality).

I love this music. There's not many times I can say I like the violin concertos as much as the same composer's piano concertos, but this is one of those times.

I wouldn't trust comments around the 'net when it comes to sound quality. I've seen too many complaints about tape hiss and artefacts that come with older recordings, they want them quashed and they don't seem to realize (or, worse, to hear) that the music gets quashed with it...

The following box just arrived from across the pond this afternoon. To my surprise, the box does not say either EMI or WarnerMusic.

Does anyone know the reason? The original box, which has become too costly, is an EMI Icon box ...
