The one thing I can agree on with you maclen is Dave's show did not get better after moving to CBS.

I never liked the wardrobe change either.

    That sounds rather ominous?

68 years old. Older than Carson when he retired. It was time.

Letterman from 1993t o around 1996 was never better. Especially those first two years on CBS...he was on fire.

In terms of clothes...he wore loafers instead of sneakers. Don't see the big deal.

And, don't forget this image from 2002...he had a nice string of Emmys.

It was good no doubt but not better. No, it was more than a shoe change it was the coat and slacks as well. Not a big deal. I guess my fondest memories of Letterman are with NBC after watching Johnny. Good times.

Those who ignore or dismiss Dave's CBS years are missing boatloads of fun...

Agreed. I did not see Letterman until he went to CBS, as all we had was over the air antenna, and we couldn't get NBC. I knew who he was before then, but discovered him in earnest in the Summer of 96, and I thought he was brilliant even then. I was off from school and could stay up most nights. I tried Leno later when I could get NBC finally...never could get into him. He felt like a phoney, at least as Tonight Show host.

As I said earlier, I had stopped watching Dave the last decade or so regularly, and sort of took him for granted. Now he's faded into television history, and I feel somewhat wistful. I sort of wish I watched him more the last couple years. I guess it's a case of not appreciating something until it goes away. He was always there. Now he isn't. Time marches on.

Thank goodness for youtube. I've spent a lot of time the last week or so catching highlights of his NBC era. I see why everyone raves about the early years, he was ahead of his time....but his CBS years, especially through 2002 ish was still great TV. The show he did after 9/11 is likely his shining moment.

I think Kimmel is really gifted at light banter, sometimes better at it than Letterman. But I don't know if Kimmel is capable or interested in discussing anything with weight which is something Letterman got really good at in recent years.

So I guess his take on Late Night will be "I'm a freaking idiot!"?

    Seems like warmed-over Conan.

I hope that's a tentative logo. Looks very '90s. Interesting it's now THE Late Show, officially.

Yes I too was surprised by the logo. Might be the early draft....they do have 3 months after all. Interesting that they went with red, white and blue---could be a small wink to his old show's logo.

CBS said that the clips were owned by world wide pants....they have complete ownership and decided to take them down.

Every time I see Donald I think of him hocking his new line of ties on Letterman which Dave conveniently pointed out to Donald's dismay were made in China. :o

    That was classic.
