Bushkin got roundly criticized for revealing so many inside stories (to which he was privvy, being Carson's attorney), but I thought he presented a very well-rounded picture of Carson: talented, insecure, neurotic, very intelligent, and a very funny man on stage.

In my best Ed McMahon impression, Yes, you are correct!

Lately I found several "Late Night w/Letterman which were around the early and mid-80's that come close to Johnny, but again Carson was King!

In Los Angeles it is 1228. I think it depends if it is running over the air in your area.

It will be very interesting to see how this does after, say, the first month, when the PR has faded and the lookie loos have moved on.

I can see those who are older than a certain age adding this to their bedtime routine in lieu of any of the current talk show hosts.

But I wonder if the appeal will extend much to the younger generations.

Huh. I have the opposite opinion. I think the sketches were always the weakest part of the show. The humor was lightweight and corny then, and I bet it hasn't aged well at all. The monologues and interviews were where he excelled. The interviews in particular will be interesting to watch, because they are so different than the heavily-rehearsed, minimally spontaneous things that appear on today's talk shows.

I wonder what they'll do with the live sponsor tags that Johnny used to sometimes do leading into commercial...? Will they leave them in? Are they going to keep all the musical cues?

When "You Bet Your Life" hit syndication, it was re-titled "The Best Of Groucho." I'm guessing that's what they'll do with Johnny.

I agree with you here. Most of the skits were cringe inducing even when I was a kid. This is one of the reasons David Letterman's original show was such a stunning Arctic blast of fresh air. He tore the tired old tropes, bits and talk show cliches to shreds.

I never got tired of Carson's easy banter with guests, however. That stuff never ages, and it's what I think most people miss most about the old talk shows. The actual talking part.

Indeed. In contrast to Carson, Dave's scripted humor pieces were often the highlights of his shows, particularly his morning show.

When "Carson's Comedy Classics" hit syndication in the early 80s, I remember thinking how perverse it was that they were using only the absolute worst parts of The Tonight Show to make these episodes. It was like watching reruns of "Laugh-In"... a corny style of humor that was already passe' in 1985.

Right? Maybe by the geriatric set, no actually not even them. Networks still rule for a while longer at least.

I know there is a way to transfer shows from my Tivo to my computer. Can anyone explain how in small words and short sentences?
