I wasn't talking about quality, just ratings. Johnny Carson will be the best on his time-slot, that's a given.

What's your source? Wiki says he guest-hosted 52 times.

Yes, it's from the seven-month period between Paar and Carson.

    I thought so.

Let's just agree that it's somewhere between 50 and 200.

Actually, I don't know where I read it, and I think it said that he had over 200 guest hosts before Joan Rivers and then Jay Leno became his permanent guest hosts. With Jerry Lewis being the most frequent guests host with (52?) guest hosting gigs. I'm thinking that Bob Newhart, Tomny Smothers, and Merv Griffin might have had quite a few as well, but I'm not sure. Maybe I read this in Fred de Cordova's book "Johnny Came Lately."

They are left in on the DVDs, so I bet they will be left.

Wikipedia says Jerry Lewis "only" guest-hosted 52 Tonight Show episodes, but that's still more than I ever would've guessed.

I'm not sure if Lewis did any in the 1950s or before Johnny.

    Here's the list:

    • Joey Bishop (177 times, mostly in the 1960s)
    • Joan Rivers (93, during the 1970s and 1980s)
    • John Davidson (87)
    • Bob Newhart (87)
    • David Brenner (70)
    • McLean Stevenson (58)
    • Jerry Lewis (52, mostly in the 1960s)
    • David Letterman (51, mostly between 1980 and 1981)

This list used to be up at johnnycarson.com, and I retrieved it off the internet archive:

Guest Hosts in order of frequency, 1962-83:
    Joey Bishop (177 times)
    Joan Rivers (93 times)
    Bob Newhart (87 times)
    John Davidson (87 times)
    David Brenner (70 times)
    McLean Stevenson (58 times)
    Jerry Lewis (52 times)
    David Letterman (51 times)

It doesn't say how many additional episodes Joan racked up during her 1983-86 tenure as permanent guest host, nor does it say how many episodes Leno did in that role.

edit: Vidiot scooped me on this!

Anybody who uses the word "interregnum" in a sentence has my respect. :righton:

I forgot about John Davidson. Every time I heard his name as the guest host I went to bed.

A joke from the Golden Girls from a 1990 episode sums this up very nicely:

Sophia: Hey, Dorothy, guess who's on Johnny Carson tonight?
    Dorothy: Who?
    Sophia: Johnny Carson.
Dorothy: Must be the anniversary show.
