I think you should have to add what genre you think the film is.

Nice, though I wouldn't consider Mars Attacks a great film, but you could substitute a dozen others, like One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest or the one where he drives the car with his feet on the beach.

Didn't even think about Cruise because he does mostly action flicks now, but you are right. I wouldn't consider tropic of thunder as great film, but you nailed the rest. He just might win with the most diversity and great films, I'll bold his five greatest IMHO:

Taps - Coming Of Age Neo-Military Drama
Risky Business - Coming of Age Comedy
Top Gun, Jack Reacher, Mission Impossible (series) - Action
    Rain Man - Drama
Born on The Fourth of July - Biographical/Historical War Drama
Interview With The Vampire - Horror
Firm and A Few Good Men - Legal Thriller
Eyes Wide Shut - Erotic Thriller
    Legend - Fantasy Adventure
    Jerry Maguire - Sports (comedy-drama)
    Collateral - neo-noir crime thriller
War of The Worlds, Minority Report - Sci Fi
Color of Money - Con/caper movie?

Your right. I would have included a personal favorite of mine, Sunset - Early Hollywood Period Western? I have not seen Looper, Moonrise Kingdom, and In Country, are they great?

Unfortunately for women, finding great roles in great films from multiple genres can be difficult. My guess is Meryl is the modern winner here for women, but I wonder if some classic leading ladies would be able to step up to the challenge?

    Sally Field

Smokey and The Bandit - Caper Comedy
    Norma Raye - Biographical Drama
Absence of Malice - Legal Drama

    Mrs. Doubtfire - Family Comedy

    Bonus:
    Sybil - mini series
Hooper - sexiest non sex scene ever!

I highly recommend Looper. It is not your typical sci-fi action film. Moonrise Kingdom is typical Wes Anderson quirkiness. In Country is not a great film but showcases Willis' range as an actor.
