How about a good-not-great actress who appeared in five classics?

    Teri Garr

    The Conversation...psychological thriller
    Young Frankenstein...comedy
Close Encounters of the Third Kind...sci-fi
    The Black Stallion...action-adventure
    Tootsie...comedy

All right, so two are comedies. But you have to admit they're different types of comedies. :)

Michael Caine was pretty darn good in "Get Carter" (neo-noir), "Hannah and Her Sisters" (romantic comedy) and "Cider House Rules" (period drama). Playing three completely different characters.

  8. My favorite Michael Caine performance is in Shock To The System as the sympathetic murderer.

I think alexpop is right about Caine. There are great actors who, at their best, seem to get lost in the characters they play--De Niro and Daniel Day-Lewis are two. Others great ones usually seem to be themselves no matter the character--Gene Hackman and Jeff Bridges come to mind. For me, Michael Caine is in the latter category.

    Bye Bye Birdie - musical
    Carnal Knowledge - drama
    Tommy - rock opera
    Magic - horror
    Grumpy Old Men - comedy

(Even though Bye Bye Birdie and Tommy are usually categorized as 'musical', I think they are clearly different genres.)

Don't think anyone's mentioned Lance Henriksen yet. I'll leave it to others to nitpick about the genres for these films! :D

    -Dog Day Afternoon
-Close Encounters of the Third Kind
    -Prince of the City
    -The Right Stuff
    -Terminator
    -Aliens

Henriksen also did an uncredited bit part in "Network" according to IMDB...

hmmm...should have been a "different genres" list :D

By the way, from that list I liked "Funny people" and "The wedding singer". "50 first dates" wasn't too bad either

I'm close to doing a Keanu Reeves list. Remember, he was in the excellent Dangerous Liaisons (drama) early in his career. Then there's The Matrix (sci-fi) and Speed (action), maybe Devil's Advocate (supernatural mystery thriller). I'm one or two movies short. Plus there's the great-actor thing. :D
