Absolutely. I wouldn't rate Prince as a world-class singer. McCartney is clearly ahead in that department.

Freddie Mercury wouldn't qualify as an outstanding piano player

I think Eltons voice was the most distinctive feature on his early records. He was also a session singer for hire at that time. He'd have made it singing other people's songs

    A few comments.

Jimi Hendrix: My wife came in the room one day while I was playing him and said, "Who is this?" I said, "Jimi Hendrix." She said, "Isn't he known as a guitar player? He should have stuck to that." That's a no vote for Hendrix.

Willie Nelson: My Father-In-Law played in a country western bar band for years until he sobered up, and he loved Willie Nelson's guitar playing. He's the one who got me to notice it. That's a yes vote for Willie.

First of all yes, Stevie Wonder is a master Harmonica, Drums, Keyboards, and I believe plays bass. Dan Fogelberg is a "3". He was a great guitarist, piano player, and played bass. Sang all of the parts typically on record and a monster songwriter. Usually when you hear one of his songs it's Dan who wrote it, plays guitars and keys, and sings all the parts. good game by the way

I'm going to throw Sting in here - a master composer and lyricist, superb bass player and a great voice too IMO...

Correct. Roger Waters was really the principal songwriter for Pink Floyd. Gilmour's collaborations really don't fly in the manner of "The 3" that I am trying to play.

    That's not true.

Roger Waters may have been the principle lyrics writer during his time in Pink Floyd, but he wasn't THE songwriter. Gilmour definitely was one of PF's songwriters.

Writing a song and writing lyrics are two different things.

If Prince is in then how about Phil Collins ... but seriously. Great songs well sung ( especially on his solo albums) and absolutely top drummer.

How about Jack Bruce? He was easily the best singer/songwriter in Cream, IMO, and he was a first rate musician without question.
