Paul Simon: Outstanding songwriter. A celebrity both for his duo with Art Garfunkel (where he virtually took the main instrumental responsability) and for his solo career, singing.

...also on my list of "30 others to consider." But not confident in his songwriting output.

So... who are on the list so far?

He did write some amazing ones, but he was also a co-writer on many, so it's hard. But a lot of people think he was a amazing guitar player, as it turns out.

LOL. Let's just get some more feedback about ol' Willie before we come to any conclusions. :)

Well, I'm a fan of Jack's work, but I guess he really didn't have enough commercial success throughout his solo career for serious consideration here (He was a little too idiosyncratic for his own good, but that's part of what I dig about him.).

Sorry to be gumming up the works here. I'll just take my parting gift and bow out of "The 3" now.

Hear me out. World class singer, no question. World class songwriter. A very very good drummer. Underrated in fact. Played behind the beat, not flashy and never overdid things but plays the hell out of so many classics.

Another vote for each of Paul Simon, Kate Bush and Phil Collins.

Let me try to get this straight. Are you saying either that Paul McCartney was a middling rock vocalist, or that Jimi Hendrix was better?

Blue Bayou, Inn Dreams, Pretty Woman, It's Over, Running Scared, Only the Lonely, Crying, I'd say he was a master songwriter. True,, many were co-written, but does that really disqualify a person? Rogers and Hammerstein? Lerner and Lowe? Rogers and Hart? Leiber and Stoller? Lennon and McCartney?

Two of my favorite triple threats: Buddy Holly and Bruce Springsteen. Both songwriters, pickers and singers, and their cover versions of other people's songs are top notch. Buddy, unfortunately, never got the chance to fully realize his full potential.

I'm going with Phil Collins - great singer, brilliant drummer, and could throw a few chords together.

On a lesser note, there's Andrew Gold.

Could he make it as an instrumentalist? Linda Ronstadt would agree.
Singer? Several hit singles and tv themes, so the voice is there.
Songwriter? Never Let Her Slip Away is sheer class, and he's got a good few more bubbling under his belt.

As to old Paul "thumbs up high" Macca. Could he become famous on bass alone? I thought he did!:D

    Same as Sting.

There's not a lot of people get world famous from playing boring old bass, but the afficiandos know... look at how James Jamerson is now appreciated.

Well, if you play another man's game, you play according to his rules. So be it.

Jeff Buckley was a stunningly good guitarist. His other talents overshadowed his playing.

I think Nick's voice in and of itself is breathtakingly gorgeous and unique.
