in response to the negativity of... that other thread... I thought I might try to ask a more positive question.

Are there any musicians in bands that, in your opinion, were excellent but never received their due?

or are you of the opinion that anybody who's really any good, usually gets their efforts recognized?

    richie furay in buffalo springfield.

history has not been kind to furay, basically making the springfield stills' and young's band, furay was a very integral part of the band, very integral.

Tom Peterson - bassist for Cheap Trick

Just watch & listen to his bass work on Cheap Trick's Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band concert - he does a pretty darn good job of playing those fluid Macca lines from the original recording, in particular "Fixing A Hole", "Getting Better", etc.

Al Jardine for one. Never thought Carl Wilson got the credit he so richly deserved as a vocalist or musician.

    Prince.

Everyone knows him as a pop icon but many don't realize what a virtuoso multi-instrumentalist he is.

Ridiculous slamming of "that other thread" notwithstanding, I'll play along:

John Oates - His talent would be totally known and appreciated were it not for the fact that he hooked up with one of the most talented vocalists in history. His vocal on "Possession Obsession" is incredible and he has considerable writing chops. Daryl on his own hasn't been successful. He only gets noticed in the duo. John clearly has much to offer.

MIchael Anthony - especially for his backing vocals, which were so important to their sound.

don't know the other thread, but isn't this still a negative topic? Both "underrated" and "overrated" sound like complaints to me.

Agree that Oates is very talented, but so much of the H&O formula seems to call for him not doing anything. Backup vocals, usually in tandem with other group members. Almost no lead harmonies. Occasional but infrequent input on lyrics to Hall's songs. Rhythm guitar, not an important element in their mix. Plus his obligatory one or two songs per album and a guitar solo or two onstage. It seems his main contribution is to make Hall more comfortable by being around.

On record, most of the harmonies (especially during the hit period) were Hall and Oates only. He co-wrote a bunch of tunes like "Maneater", "Out of Touch", "You Make My Dreams..." as well. He's also responsible for production decisions throughout. Again, Hall's albums haven't done so well without him. Hall had one hit with "Dreamtime". Beyond that, nothing. Oates absolutely serves a purpose.

I would tend to agree, but EVH himself says Michael's vocal contribution is over-rated.
