Box sets that didn't disappoint

I wasn't tremendously disappointed with the Genesis SACD boxes. Especially the 5.1 mixes.
The Dylan SACD box the same, and the Dead Can Dance SACD box.

 

David Bowie Five Years vinyl box. Even the live albums I thought were good, with only the 2 versions of Ziggy feeling a bit superfluous.
Neil Young Official Release Series Discs 5-8. Never having heard these on vinyl before made the price something I can live with.

 

The porch crusher definitely didn't disappoint...

it covers a pretty wide range of music and I recall it being 3 lps

 

The Iron Maiden box set a few years back re-ignited my love of Maiden. 2 CDs of B-Sides that I had never heard. It was like hearing vintage Maiden for the first time.

The live CDs were just as cool. Old Paul Di'Anno stuff....Monsters of Rock '88....even a full set from '82 when Bruce was the brand new singer.

 

I just got this one recently. It's groovy, man.

Perhaps he was referring to the recent vinyl box sets, not the CDs.

 

All were fantastic when first released, and are still indispensable.

Same with The Who box in 1994, that was a revelation, although it's not aged well.

My absolute favourite way back was the Sandy Denny 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' set, from 1986. Jaw dropping thing to get given aged 19.

 

Here's one that doesn't disappoint: all three volumes, 66 LPs, of Commodore Records on Mosaic. After having this material on cdr (and on LPs from Atlantic, Columbia, London et al and cds from Columbia, Chronogical Classics, Neatwork et al) today I have all three sets themselves, delivered to my door from an ebay sale that was priced right. I'm very happy!

The James Brown Star Time box set is a wonderful overview with pretty much everything that all but the most hardcore JB fan needs. Great sound, too!

 

Well most recently I would say Bob Dylan Cutting edge 18 disc set.

Although Under this topic I think I have to also mention the Beatles Mono box CD set. Good mastering. Wonderful Japanese mini LP sleeves. All for around 120 USD. I wish all classic album collections were released like this!

 

Spirit - Original Album Classics box set. A spartan (packaging wise) box set that contains the first 5 Spirit releases, inexpensive with above average sound. Completely satisfied.

 

Grateful Dead: 30 Trips Around the Sun

Not only did this set not disappoint, it redefined the term "Box set"

30 live shows spanning 30 years (80 CD's), Gold 45 RPM (in Lid), Leather book (in "secret" compartment), all housed in a wooden sarcophagus (with a bonus original concert ticket and backstage pass)

 

Just about any boxset by the Grateful Dead..they know how to take care of their fans.

I pretty much did, as I was reffering to the vinyl set. Please don't be hasty to stir criticism.

 

One of the first career retrospective boxes ever--The best album tracks, unreleased material, etc. Plus great extensive liner notes. Arguably THE blueprint for all the intelligent boxes that came later.

 

Zombie Heaven. This is probably my favorite box set of all time. Not only nearly complete, but with tons of rarities and previously unreleased material that you actually want to hear more than once, and terrific liner notes.

Note that the original wallet configuration is shown. It was subsequently reconfigured to a smaller package with reduced size liner notes (same material, but smaller). Shown in the preferred configuration.

 

I enjoyed the 10th anniversary Def Jam box set.

Japanese issuing of All I Really Need: The Complete Atlantic Recordings, 1965-1971 - The Rascals.
The annotation found on Page ninety-six of the smaller of the two booklets enclosed is very interesting, informative, and entertaining...all at the same time.
Worth. every. penny.
