I’m sure there are plenty of people who think these kind of lists are pretty lazy from a journalistic point of view and I wouldn’t really disagree. As a teenager I remember using an old NME ‘Best Albums List’ from the early 90s to discover some great albums/artists I had never heard of. This is what I think they are good at, not to confirm whether you agree with them or not because it is entirely subjective. Naturally, I didn't always agree with every choice but it was a great deal of fun going through them! Maybe because I’m 20 years older and I’ve had a much greater chance to take in the so called ‘classics’ (not to mention my tastes have changed a lot) but this list comes across as slightly disappointing and dare I say it, predictable. The first album on this list that I haven’t heard is Gillian Welch’s Time (The Revelator) and that’s number 79! However, there are a few things I noticed:
    • Nice to see Marquee Moon, Hounds Of Love and On The Beach so high up.
    • In Rainbows ahead of OK Computer and Kid A. Contentious!
    • This Is Hardcore is a surprise but there’s no room for Different Class. A mistake, surely! Likewise, I can’t agree with Debut being there over Post.
    • Third/Sister Lovers is higher than No1 Record and Radio City. All brilliant albums but I’m sure not everyone will agree with this.
    • There are not many albums from this century but I tend to think this is a good thing as I do believe that great albums need to stand the test of time. Having said that, I’m glad Ys is there. I’m surprised Yankee Hotel Foxtrot isn’t as Uncut are big admirers of Wilco.
    • There are a few albums, mainly between 100-200, that I need to check out!

These lists do nothing but spark controversy as we all know... but what I will say is that I have noticed Serge Gainsbourg's Histoire De Melody Nelson, which was merely a cult favourite up until a decade or so ago, is featuring in these lists more and more often. Which is right, of course, but it's also nice to know it's finally being seen for how good it is beyond musos.

Pity is you can read often the age of the reviewers and the anglosaxon perspective at historical albums. For the rest: always fine to read these kind of lists.

There's one French album and about 5 German albums in that chart. If it was Rolling Stone Europe wouldn't even be acknowledged. If you don't believe me check out the Hall of Fame.

    I've got 83 of them.

I was expecting a list of all the "usual suspects", but it was cool to see some "not quite as common" titles for a change. (3 Can albums? Wow!) ;)

This list looks more traditional than most of these lists nowadays. Critics try to get fancy with albums most have never heard of. This list is less British too with only a smattering of only popular in the UK bands like Can, Pulp, etc. Still not a ton of soul or any hard rock at first glance. Lots of Joni and and Neil so that's good.

There's 25 US/Canadian albums in the top 50 so it's definitely not the usual UK list that puts What's The Story at #2 and The Stone Roses at #3

Pet Sounds should be in there but I don't think there's any justification for giving it the top spot.

Good to see Forever Changes placed so high. A few years back, people were writing it off as hippy fluff (which is nonsense but it's worrying how quickly nonsense can become 'the prevailing critical view').

The traditional aspect of it is why I said it was slightly predictable. For me these lists were always a gateway to discovering 'new to me' music and from that point of view it's slightly disappointing. I guess I can't be too critical though because there's always a fine line between choosing too many contentious choices and being predictable.

I got 83 albums (or so) from the list, if I recall correctly to what my collection at home has.
I was expecting the typical list but this indeed had some weird choices, strange omissions and surely lacked album or two (more in fact as it seems that several essential to me albums aren't listed at all).
