Hopefully it will end up cost competitive with a Michell Orbe or a VPI Scoutmaster.

the plastic pieces are now metal...looks great! i'd imagine it's going to be a solid table, though i'm very interested in finding out how much it's going to cost.

any guesses on that front? i'm thinking $1999 for the first model.

This is going to be way more expensive than the masses commenting over on Facebook are expecting.

    I'll bet higher.

Looks like this is a completely new machine based on the aesthetics of the old 1200. Good move for Matsushita they'll sell well and audiophiles will continue to decry them. All is well in the world again.

It's a completely new machine. The only thing the same is the aesthetic.

Note the keywords "limited edition" in the copy. Don't think they're doing a full-scale relaunch.

Edit: Some helpful folks below have pointed out there will be a general release model in addition to the limited model.

I bet that Limited Edition that comes out first starts at $3k, with the regular one coming later in 2016 will be $1999

Folks, click on the little dots on these pictures to get more construction details, including cross-section graphics. This is built like a tank. It's not an AT-LP120.

    From the linked article:

"The 50th anniversary limited edition Grand Class SL-1200GAE will be available this summer in a run of just 1,200 units. But from what we can tell the only advantages to opting for the premium version is a serial number plate on the base, and early availability. Because the SL-1200G won’t be available until several months later in late 2016."

The SL-1200GAE will be limited edition and the SL-1200G will be the normal model.

No mention of the tonearm wiring quality? Wonder if it has the standard tinned copper or the improved OFC of the M5G??

I should hope so, it weighs almost 40 lbs. That's a tank!

I'm kinda color blind. Is aluminum anodized with a color. It's impossible to match that classic Technics silver when you scratch it. I'd love it to be plain aluminum of some sort. Wow, and ENGRAVED Technics logo! I wonder if that's only the special edition. Making 1500 of those was not enough. They are going to fly out the door. Oh, that's okay.

If this was coming from a boutique manufacturer, you can bet it would have an MSRP of $10K+. But because of economies of scale, you'll get quality construction and materials for a fraction of that. Which is why it's appealing to me! I like all that solid metal combined with the latest modern enhancements benefiting from computer-aided-design.
