There's no doubt that Chuck's Great Twenty-Eight compilation album covers most of the greats, proving that he was the true king of rock-n-roll, but are any key tracks missing that are worthwhile to hear on this single disc overview? There's about 10 minutes left to fill, but if you add tracks, you'd have to change the title to something like The Sublime Twenty-Nine! :p

The tracks included on the album:
    Maybellene
    Thirty Days
    You Can't Catch Me
    Too Much Monkey Business
    Brown-Eyed Handsome Man
    Roll Over Beethoven
    Havana Moon
    School Days
    Rock And Roll Music
    Oh Baby Doll
    Reelin' And Rockin'
    Sweet Little Sixteen
    Johnny B. Goode
    Around And Around
    Carol
    Beautiful Delilah
    Memphis
    Sweet Little Rock And Roller
    Little Queenie
    Almost Grown
    Back In The USA
    Let It Rock
    Bye Bye Johnny
    I'm Talking About You
    Come On
    Nadine
    No Particular Place To Go
I Want To Be Your Driver

Tracks that I think should have been included, off the top of my head:
    Wee Wee Hours
    No Money Down
    Down The Road a Piece
    Confessin' The Blues
    You Never Can Tell
    Promised Land

What would you include or maybe even drop?

I bought that CD almost 30 years ago! It's still pretty "great," but it does lack all those tracks you mentioned. There are other, probably better collections since then that include some or all of those other songs. It also lacks "Run Rudolph Run" and "My Ding-a-Ling," but I'm sure opinions will vary on how essential those two are (for the record, I like "Rudolph").

Definitive Collection, for instance, has both "You Never Can Tell" and "Promised Land" in addition to all the Great 28 tracks. You can get that single disc at Amazon right now for just $8.99! Looks like there other, even more extensive two-disc sets out there, plus an exhaustive box set that came out last year, I believe.

"Oh Baby Doll' should have been left off. That one is not essential in my book, although it is somewhat fun. "Promised Land", "Run Rudolph Run", "No Money Down", or "You Never Can Tell" would have been better.

    Love Rudolph too.
My Ding-a-ling....well....let's hope that in 100 years no record companies are compiling best ofs and include that to represent Chuck Berry at his commercial peak. In fact is there no way that song can't just be destroyed and mind-wiped. I'll keep the 28 mate ! they're super great.

Vols. 2 and 3 of Chuck Berry's Golden Decade have a mess of tracks that stand up to The Great Twenty-Eight. Even if they weren't huge chart hits, there's no way I could do without "Jo Jo Gunne," "Downbound Train," "Got To Find My Baby," "Jaguar & the Thunderbird," "Man & the Donkey," "Viva Viva Rock & Roll," "Go Go Go," "No Money Down" or "County Line."

As far as the actual Great Twenty-Eight album goes, I never really warmed up to "I Want To Be Your Driver" or "Oh Baby Doll."

I agree. "You Never Can Tell" and "Promised Land" are absolute essentials. What about Joe Joe Gun? Betty Jean? Little Marie?

One thing to remember is this album came out pre-CD, so the "single disc overview" described in the OP is not its original form.

I'm curious why you're bringing this up, Mike Bass. Wasn't this very topic discussed in the following thread?

POLL: Which Chuck Berry Album Should I Get? »

(And JohnnyQuest is right about "Promised Land" and "You Never Can Tell," btw. Plus I'll add "Tulane." What's currently on 28 can stay as is. :))

No, that thread had to do with Anthology and Definitive.

This takes a look at 28 and specifically which tracks should be added/omitted.

I'd add "It Wasn't Me" -- minor track maybe but I love it.

"You Never Can Tell" is a major miss.

    and as mentioned

    "Rudolph"
    "Wee Wee Hours"
    "Down The Road a Piece"
    "Promised Land"

"Great 28" one of the best comps ever.

Ah, OK. Well, I'll go with what I said before: The Great 28 plus "You Never Can Tell," "Promised Land" and "Tulane." In fact I've made pretty much that very comp for myself, using the Berry Chess Box as the source for all songs. Because the box excludes "I Want to Be Your Driver," I replaced it with "Too Pooped to Pop."

    Anthony Boy (#60)
    Too Pooped to Pop (#42)
    You Never Can Tell (#14)
    Little Marie (#54)
    Promised Land (#41)
    Dear Dad (#95)
    My Ding-a-Ling (#1)
    Reelin' & Rockin' (#27) live

Here's my list expanding it to 30. All charted in US/UK.

    Maybellene
    Wee Wee Hours
    Thirty Days
    No Money Down
    Roll Over Beethoven
    You Can't Catch Me
    Too Much Monkey Business
    Brown Eyed Handsome Man
    School Day
    Oh! Baby Doll
    Rock And Roll Music
    Sweet Little Sixteen
    Johnny Be Goode
    Beautiful Delilah
    Carol
    Sweet Little Rock And Roller
    Jo Jo Gunne
    Run Rudolph Run
    Almost Grown
    Little Queenie
    Back In The USA
    Let It Rock
    Too Poopped To Pop
    Jaguar And Thunderbird
    Go Go Go
    Nadine
    No Particular Place To Go
    You Never Can Tell
    Promised Land
    My Ding-A-Ling

The ones that charted I left off to make it an even 30 were...

    Merry Christmas Baby
    Anthony Boy
    Broken Arrow
    Little Marie
    Dear Dad

    Darryl

PS I tried to not include live & re releases.

Chuck's work needs a 2 CD set. Whatever you put on one disc something important is gonna be left off.

Chuck had 27 chart Hits, and "The Great 28" SHOULD have had every single one of them on it.

Definitive Collection is great- nice sound and a fantastic track list. You really can't go wrong if it's under $10. :)

Here is a single disc alternative to the Great 28 called Rocks released by Bear Family. It also includes a large booklet with liner notes.

    1. Maybellene

    3. You Can't Catch Me
    4. No Money Down
    5. Brown Eyed Handsome Man
    6. Roll Over Beethoven
    7. Too Much Monkey Business
    8. School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes The Bell)
    9. Rock And Roll Music
    10. Oh Baby Doll
    11. Sweet Little Sixteen

    13. Johnny B. Goode
    14. Around And Around
    15. Beautiful Delilah
    16. Carol
    17. Memphis, Tennessee
    18. Sweet Little Rock And Roller
    19. Run Rudolph Run
    20. Little Queenie

    23. Betty Jean
    24. Let It Rock

    28. Nadine (Is It You?)
    29. You Never Can Tell
    30. Promised Land

The track listing is pretty similar to the Great 28 with a few differences

Rocks omits the following tracks from the Great 28:

    Havana Moon

    Come On
I Want To Be Your Driver

Rocks adds these tracks that are not on the Great 28.
