Sad to report that Danny Smythe, original drummer for the Box Tops (and their precursor, the Devilles) has passed away at just 67. The news was reported by Box Tops bassist Bill Cunningham on Facebook this morning.

This is just death by a thousand knives seeing the members from all of my favorite bands pass away one by one.

Thanks for the great music, Danny.

Early video of Danny giving the winning performance on the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour.....note his use of the Devilles kit!

I was just thinking the other day about how the 4 or 5 drum snaps in the intro to The Letter are so iconic that most can identify that song before any bass or anything else comes in. Two taps on the snare, and you know what that song is.

Terrible news, but at least there has been critical reassessment of the Box Tops albums and more reissues in recent years. The music has truly lasted the test of time, and he got to know that much.
