  1. Maybe you can get the JBLs with Pink Grills? :tiphat:

  2. No, they came in Orange, blue and Brown (but the brown looks great/black in this pic) .. Very 1970s colors. The new grills you can get I think added grey/black

Oh year. I love those vintage space age grills, for sure.

YOU'RE RIGHT! I had the brown. It was the most neutral. Wow, haven't seen a pic of my old speakers in over 40 years. I remembered them as being blue.

Thanks. I only had them for three days but they were an intense three days.

If it was now I'd get the blue.

RATS by the Kinks sounded great on the JBL 100s. That I do remember, the first song I played on them when I brought them home and hooked them up. Why would I remember that and not the color of the grills?

  6. And then of course they became more famous in popular culture after being featured in the timeless Maxell Advert. I bet it helped sell more speaker for JBL.

  7. You're sounding like a character in those comedy romance films when the two hate each other in the beginning and by then end of the movie, they are shacking up and married. :tiphat:

  8. I'll play it when I get home. I was playing John Fahey on them last night. His guitar sounding amazing though them.

  12. My original pair from 75 had orange grills. I chose those. That was a pretty cool color in the mid 70s. Very modern. Brown was MEH.

Orange was and still is the color of the FUTURE! I love orange stuff. Especially plastic gear.

  14. Ha! Maybe. But orange had been a primary accept color in mid century design through the late 50s to late 70s and again during the past 15 years or so with the mid century deign revival.

I always associate it with the space age and Stanley Kubrick!

A pair of those (the studio version, no wood) were in the master control room at KPFK (still could be, for all I know) and they sounded really nice. First time in my young life I ever heard detailed, full, accurate, powerful (did I say accurate) bass. I have a soft spot for 15" woofers.

This is probably the reason a lot of people bought them back in the 1970's.., that and the cool Le Corbusier chair!

Those look like the speakers they used to have at Golden State Recorders in SF. They sound great.

Me too with copies of Bobby Hutcherson's Happenings on Blue Note, and a Music From Big Pink thrown in on the deal.

This is the funniest thread I've read in a long time. I had - and grew quickly to dislike - a variant of the JBL 100s that was missing the mid-range driver (the JBL-88s?). I think they were even brighter.

OTOH, a speaker that could make Basil Rathbone sound like Robert Plant might actually be interesting...
