I can heartily recommend the new reissue of Tak Shindo's Mganga! that Modern Harmonic has released.

Grabbed this one for a buck a while back and a number of folks were drawn to the artwork. What we have here from Britain's Bob Sharples is some splashes of space age pop whimsiness (maybe not enough for all here), pop-up big band motifs, lonely horns and swatches of very high grade elevator ride music. And the vocals from The Sandmen (four guys and two gals) simply swoon.[IMG]

    Any ideas about it value?

Never heard of it, but looks interesting. If I was still into LPs, I'd want that for the artwork!, but I 'll settle for cd for the music.

I was interested in the notes on the site :
"As a Japanese-American, Shindo brought a unique cultural perspective to the proceedings -- he combined the sounds of his own heritage into a brilliantly orchestrated shabu-shabu that made him a highly in-demand arranger and composer (Shindo would later become known for his TV scores, including Gunsmoke).

Nowadays, we'd call it "appropriation," but at the time Exotica knew no such boundaries -- anybody's culture and sound was fair game, often leading to unusual and thrilling combinations of sound."

I have to admit, I don’t listen to this genre, but absolutely love hearing it in Movies, TV Shows, etc.... :righton:

I know this is not what many think as Retro Lounge, but I'm gaga for it.

The addition of the Gene Lowell Singers on this fabulous (cannot not be overstated) lp is the true treat here. I wish I could track down more about them. They almost sound like the folks that sang the Flintstones or Jetson themes. Also, Hal Mooney's arrangements are top flight and will make your speakers stand up to attention. Oh, and bongos can be found here as well.

The cover is more promising than the music.

Amazon is the market for high-end rare and sealed, or low=end near mint condition stuff like that. It takes weeks or months, but you get the sale. That is where I have 900 items parked for viewing pleasure. $25 to $50 is what I expect for exotic stuff.

Of course Enoch Light on Project 3 Records (thick laminated g/f cover) is going to be hard to pass on in the $1.00 bins, as was the Warner Brothers Workshop Series (remember that series? Neither do I). The cover is gold foil and looks stunning in person, scan does not do it justice.

Steel Drums on the legendary HIFIRECORD label. I guess the title is so intriguing that the artist need not be mentioned at all.

But with a cover like this, and technical notes about Ampex machines and Telefunken mics how can you go wrong?

Is this a London BlueBack? BBs are known for high fidelity. Stereo would be best of course.

I love this music!!! Such a great discovery for me. I am a "classic rock" 45 year old kind of guy. I listened to stuff like Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Slaughter, GNR, Cinderella, etc in high school (and I still like those bands). I eventually went back to forth between hair bands and classic rock. But I have always appreciated good stuff and I love this type of music. There is another thread here:

Would you buy audiophile vinyl reissues of 'space age bachelor pad music?' »

I have a hard time finding dollar records in my area but on occasion I will find something or luck out with an eBay find (a recent find was a "lot" of Equivel, 2 Martin Denny albums, Dick Schory and Arthur Lyman. Got them for $5. None of them had inner sleeves and had split seams but they were in surprisingly good shape and looked like they had been played very little. Maybe the vinyl used back then was better, I dunno because it is pretty sturdy and durable.

Dick Schory has been reissued, would love to hear a QRP pressing.
