Thanks for the packaging description of the new Herb Alpert/ Tijuana Brass reissues on the new label "Herb Alpert Presents." No liner notes is fine as long as the packaging is not the cheap looking jewel cases.

  2. I wonder what these new re-issues will do to values of the original LP's, which you find in the $1. or less bins? I see they are re-issuing these on vinyl also. One shop I go to, who can't see giving anything away, sat a box of at least 100 TJB LP's out on the sidewalk with a $1. sign for the entire box.
Although I have many originals of the TJB LP's, the only ones I really like are "Going Places" and "Whipped Cream...". I have those 2 on the fabulous Shout Factory CD's and "Whipped Cream..." on their picture disc LP. Glad I bought them when I did, because I frequently see them for $50.+ now.

I'm thinking of buying only those albums that were not released on the "Shout Factory" label.
Other than the "Lonely Bull" comparison between the "Shout Factory" and the "Herb Alpert Presents", is there any worthwhile improvements on the other albums, i.e., "Whipped Cream & Other Delights", "SRO", etc.?

SOUTH OF THE BORDER is way better on the new CD than on the Shout version. I'm still working my way though these.

Damn. Hearing so many good reviews means I'm going to have to buy them all over again. So far I've only bought the ones that weren't available from Shout!

I have always wanted to buy HA&TJB on CD because my grandpa used to listen to the records all the time. Everytime I hear a song it reminds me of him. Now hearing the news about the remasters it may be time to buy.

HA&TJB aren't my thing musically, really, and never have been. But I have a sentimental attachment to Summertime, for similar reasons, and I'll be buying the CD issue on that alone.

I'm going to guess that it's probably not even one of the better records of theirs.

Wow! I'm already impressed with the sound of the "Shout Factory" reissues! If the current reissues sound better, I will buy them again and keep the Shout Factory counterparts.

The jury is still out on some of these. I personally have not yet had enough time with this huge bunch to make a blanket statement - nor do I think a blanket statement is in order. Each album - each song - may need to be taken on its own terms.

I'm on record as being thrilled with THE LONELY BULL, SOUTH OF THE BORDER, and WHIPPED CREAM & OTHER DELIGHTS (from last fall). My opinion on VOLUME 2 is also favorable. It's not as dulled-down as the Shout "files" were and not as harsh and thin as the old A&M CD was.

I'm still evaluating GOING PLACES. Early reaction is that it may not be the best version ever out there. I find that some tracks seem to have tape damage that wasn't present back in the old A&M CD days of 1988. The best version of GOING PLACES may be the old A&M CD 3264 or a Japanese counterpart, POCM-1949. Tracks like "Tijuana Taxi" and "Spanish Flea" that have been through the mill on compilation after compilation have not worn well. We first heard some of these tape-damage artifacts on the DEFINITIVE HITS compilation - and they sound better here on the HAP version. But I'll take the old, clean versions from the A&M CD any day. I'm still evaluating the other tracks.

  10. Just wondering if the TJB master and session tapes were destroyed or damaged in the fire at Universal Studios a few years ago. Maybe Herb Alpert hung on to them and stuck them in the corner of his garage?

I've come to the conclusion (after hearing the first six albums) that the A&M CD's of '88 sound nicer in the high end. Probably because they were made with younger master tapes. Last night, when I did an A/B of the "What Now My Love" album (using the A&M and HAP discs) I needed to add a little bottom to the A&M CD, to keep up with the HAP. But once I did that tweaking, the A&M sounded better overall; though the HAP disc did sound warmer. However, I'm positive that warmth could be added to the '88 disc, if need be.

    I should add...
the HAP Vol. 2 is the best of the first six. Not nearly as "metallic" sounding as the '88 disc. A sonic improvement overall.

The newer ones also don't sound as shrill as the Mp3 Download version of the album, either,an warmer, easier to the ears listen! My eardrums was ringing first listen to the Digital Download of "Volume 2" Especially on "Marching Through Madrid",the Shrillness of the Soprano singer almost Deafened Me! OW!

These packages are all gatefolds with an inside pocket for the CD. No plastic at all.

Are you finding any of the CD's scratched? I've had two so far, but they play just fine.

    Hold on doggie!
They generally do sound better, however, last night I did an A/B of "Sounds Like" (1967) and it was the first time where the "Shout Factory" (a.k.a. signature series)
clearly sounded better to me (except for the last track, Casino Royale). A much nicer sound ....clearly the master tapes were in better condition back in 2005.
It's a shame this one never got released in '88 when the master tapes were younger still. Oh well, at least we got the "Shout Factory - signature series" disc.

Thank you Zen for the feedback on "Sounds Like" which is among my least favorite TJB LP's. I'm glad that I decided to keep all my "Shout Factory" releases of Herb Alpert LP's. I bought them all during the very first released date except "Re-Whipped".
I'm also curious if there are any improvements in the sound of the new "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" and "Christmas Album" reissues over the "Shout Factory" counterparts.

Both WHIPPED CREAM and the CHRISTMAS ALBUM sound very good in their HAP versions. Both have a rounder, warmer sound about them which seems to be common among all of these re-remasters.

I hear Herb Alpert will be on next week's edition of Sound Opinions radio show (from PRX - it's usually on listener-supported stations).

New shows are posted online Thursdays. They had an all bossa nova edition during the Olympics and played Sergio Mendes' version of Mas Que Nada while never mentioning Sergio nor the importance that Herb played in putting together that single,as well as the first Brasil '66 album where it came from. The show is kinda for NPR folks who aren't up to speed to modern music, but I often feel less informed after listening.

I use it as a tool to learn more about modern music. The most useful part of it for me is usually "music news" at the beginning of the show, and reviews of new CDs. The interviews (which generally take up about nearly 2/3 of every show) are hit and miss with me, although I do listen to all of them. The bossa nova episode presented me with a lot of information I didn't know about what had occurred in Brazilian politics over the last 50 years (not something I ever followed on my own).

What I like about the show is that it is concise. There are other "new music" shows I listen to but they require hours of attentive listening, and I don't always have the time to do that, and over weeks I fall behind.
