Films - Coming Soon - The Criterion Collection

 

Mildred Pierce, Rumble Fish, Woman of the Year, Being There, Ghost World although the DVD is not bad.

 

Just the first six on that list are coming out in May. The rest are Feb-Apr.

I'm DEFINITELY in for 'Ghost World' and 'Good Morning.' Maybe for 'Jeanne Dielman', if I'm in the mood for an impulse buy. I'd love to get 'Taipai Story' if it were available individually, but I don't think it's worth buying the whole Scorsese box just for that.

Weird that the Scorsese box is back to being a BD+DVD set. I thought Criterion had given that nonsense up already.

Boring list.. they could do better..

It's a little strange that this upcoming reissue of Good Morning also includes I Was Born But....
I'm all for including a bonus film, but they already released that one back in 2008 on one of the "Silent Ozu" Eclipse sets.

 

True, but the Eclipse sets were DVD-only. I'm sure there will be plenty of people glad to get it on Blu-ray.

 

Really happy about Ghost World. That's been among my most wanted blu-ray's for years.

 

recently bought Tampopo just so I could watch it again. It still holds up. While it's not a masterpiece it is entertaining and flies right along.

 

Othello is a major release for fans of Orson Welles, featuring both his 1952 and 1955 cuts. For the first time since the old Criterion laserdisc, we have something other than the flawed 1992 restoration available on home video.

 

I wonder if they'll be going through all of the recent Shochiku restorations. I have the Color 4 Ozu box set, and while they look great, they have no bonus materials on the discs themselves. Plus the set is not cheap, and neither are the individual releases they've done.

 

Eager to have Othello.

Will also buy Rumble Fish, even though I just bought the region free German import about 6 months ago.

 

Is the '92 restoration the version that was used for the old Image DVD? I have that disc, but that's the only version I've ever seen. Will the release of the Criterion disc mean there are going to be 3 different versions available?

 

Yes, and yes.

The 1992 version is based on the 1955 U.S. cut, but with some differences, notably a re-recorded soundtrack.

The upcoming Criterion BD has been confirmed as featuring the original soundtracks on both the 1952 and 1955 cuts. Huge news for Welles fans.

Jeanne Dielman - absolutely essential.

 

VERY interested to hear Thora Birch's take on Ghost World all these years later. Could two careers have gone in more different directions than Birch and Scarlett Johansson?

 

I'm not going to collect it, but Dheepan is definitely a fine movie . . . I encourage others to check it out (e.g., Netflix).
