Pick a slot, any slot. And yes, I know some of them sort of overlap (like doing a cowboy song on acoustic, or sliding "Maggie's Farm" into a cowboy double feature. "Other" is there as a preemptive strike against a slot I forgot, or maybe never heard of.

    So pick your slot!

Lol, I voted for Dylan, which is the only vote so far.

Weir was pretty good at choosing the right Dylan songs for him, and he gets credit for mostly getting the words right.

However, a strong second for whatever slot Lazy Lightning>Supplication was in, that might be my favorite Weir composition.

    "Cassidy" fits the "other" slot.

I was a Dylan fan long before I got on the bus, and my first two Dead shows were Dylan-Dead shows that I attended primarily to see The Bard. After the '87 collaborations was the prime period for the "Dylan slot", and I always looked forward to it (hoping to get "Desolation Row" or "Stuck Inside of Mobile", but seeming to get a lot of "Queen Jane"s).

The "Bob on acoustic" slot I find to be a breath of fresh air in those later shows (when Jerry often seemed intent on getting the first set the Hell over with as quickly as possible).

I agree about the Bob On Acoustic slot but it only existed for so short a period of time that I can't count it.

I think his Dylan coverage is some of the best out there and anytime he pulls out Masterpiece, Queen Jane or Mobile, I'm all in. :)

How do I vote for "Black-Throated Wind"?

I say "Other". It's not really country in the way "El Paso" or "Mexicali" is country...

I probably should have called the "slide slot" the "blues slot" to be a bit broader.

    Rooster/Walkin' Blues/Minglewood/Wang Dang Doodle/Schoolgirl/Spoonful etc.

One song does not make a "slot". :)

"BTW" was in the "Bob on acoustic" slot in '94, so there's an option for ya.

You were just being kind and making a space for me on the bus. :) Thanks. Maybe if I would have been so gracious around '94-'95 the bus wouldn't have toppled over.

In closing, I will offer up the "Touch Head" blasphemy that "Dylan slot" > "Pigpen Rant slot". :)

I am with you on many points, and I love the Dylan slot, but there we part ways.

You can have my 'Caution' when you pry it from my cold dead hands. :wantsome:

I guess I'll take the idiot chair and say my fave Bob turn is ...

    "Me and My Uncle".

    Thank you and Good Night.

I am not now nor hopefully will I ever be a "skipper", but when I listen to a Pig era show and we start heading down to see the gypsy woman ... let's just say I don't do cartwheels.

    Blasphemy, I know.

Give me an opening Stranger, then a mid-first set Cassidy, with a LIG or TMNS to close the set. :)

    Also, give me a Sailor>Saint pre-drums in set 2

Seems like over time Cassidy stopped being an "and" option with LIG or TMNS and became an "or" option, sliding its way closer to the end of the set. In the last 10 years of the band it was pretty uncommon to get more than 1 of those 3 in a first set.

A little searching on setlists.net pops up this first set from '76 with all three:

    06/15/76
Beacon Theater - New York City, NY

    Set 1:
    Promised Land
    Sugaree
    Cassidy
    Candyman
    The Music Never Stopped
It Must Have Been The Roses
    Looks Like Rain
    Tennessee Jed
    Let It Grow
    Might As Well
