The discussion about people who think A Horse With No Name is a Neil Young song made me think about this thread... there are many it seems I can think of with songs people outright associate with an artist who had nothing to do with it

Some off the top of my head
Donna Summer - I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor)
Pointer Sisters - We Are Family (Sister Sledge)
Prince - Oh Sheila (Ready For The World)
Cher (and some random guy) - Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now (Starship) --- I remember being in a store when this song came on and two people nearby were saying this was one of their all time favorite Cher songs lol

often times I see the 2 big hits by twisted sister and the 2 big hits by quiet riot credited to the other band. mainly on download sites but still it seems to happen frequently

An obvious one is "Rescue Me" by Fontella Bass, which often is thought to be by Aretha Franklin.

"Lies" was a Beatles' imitation by the Knickerbockers that fools many people.

Most of Badfinger, however I think they are superior to the Beatles.

The voice is uncannily similar. The name 'Fontella Bass' itself adds another layer of confusion: for some time I thought it was the name of a group, rather than a person, and I'd have believed you if you'd told me the recording was by 'Fontella Bass featuring Aretha Franklin'.

Another one which cropped up here recently was Drift Away by Dobie Gray. A great many people believe it's a Doobie Brothers recording. The Dobie/Doobie similarity must add significantly to the confusion...

Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell is not a Michael Jackson song , although to be fair he is doing background vocals.

I've known a couple of people who consistently blur the lines between Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney and Jay Black (Jay & the Americans). They're all very distinct to me.

Wow, I love Elvis, but he couldn't have sung either of these like this if his life depended on it. This is first I've ever heard of people thinking this.

Understandable, it's basically a re-write of "I want you back"

    "Suspicion" – Terry Stafford.
Reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1964.
Many people thought this was Elvis, who in fact had released his version two years earlier.

Timely. I only actually found out this week that it was Conway Twitty who did the best-known version I listened to obsessively as a kid (thanks to a hand-me-down tape of this, with no tracklist or inlay, which is probably an odd thing for a pre-teen kid in the 80s to be listening to)- I really loved that song. My grandmother told me it was Elvis, and I'd never bothered to fact-check it for 30-odd years.

Apart from "Horse With No Name" (which is sort of understandable), the most egregious example was walking along a street overhearing some guy who was trying to show off to his date that he'd seen James Brown that weekend. She said she didn't know who that was, and he told her it was the guy who'd had a hit with that song, "the one that goes play that funky music white boy". It took all my self-control not to administer a beating to him in broad daylight.

You never heard One Bad Apple? It came on the radio. I don't think age matters here. Plus I still love the Jackson Five. Feel free to be judgmental though. :tsk:
