Use to watch Wrestling religiously back in the day but that all came to a halt following the Chris Benoit tragedy, call it what you will. I'm not really believing the official story as I'm sure there's some conspiracy behind what happened. Anyway, enough of that - I only just learned that Goldberg came back. And in October too?! Still had no idea how that slipped under my nose. And yes, I do tend to come back and watch a couple matches but that's about it. Also caught Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame where I noticed that Barry Windham stood in place of Ole Anderson, of whom I must admit never really got to know much of. And I see he's got a lot of bad blood towards Vince McMahon and even Flair. Guy sure is bitter.
Confusion at the time, but all the facts are known now. The only real bitch left is the Memorial show thaey put on that night. A few people had a really bad feeling about Chris, particularly Chavo who got the cryptic text with his address and letting them know the gate was unlocked. Chavo and Dean had no idea what was going on, but they knew something wasn't right. I hate what happened. I cry for Nancy often. And poor Daniel. I cringe when I see any of the boys doing moves with their heads including head chair shots. All that aside, I miss Chris. I saw him work Sabu back in the 90s when he was still wrestling with his Pegasus Kid tights.
I really miss Chris too. The results of his brain scan were devastating and you have to thank Chris Nowinski for recovering Benoit's brain at the right time too.
Uh oh... Paige in the news again Paige Releases Statement About XXX Material Being Stolen From Her And Leaked Online
WWE is in an awkward spot due to their film about her (Paige's) family and life. It just seems like she's made a lot of bad decisions. Also, it appears Xavier Woods of New Day was in one of the videos and could possibly face some reprocussions.
40 years ago the wife and I took a couple of polaroids. I thought I looked better than that. They burned over 39 years ago. In this electronic day and age why would ANYONE in the public eye film or keep anything like that? That damned tape that was "just for their own enjoyment" destroyed Chyna's career leaving porn as her only viable option. Didn't hurt Waltman much though.
Has anyone watched the Southpaw Regional Wrestling videos the WWE made featuring Cena, Jericho, Rusev, Gallows and Anderson and others? It's brilliant. The premise is that someone found a lost tape of a defunct promotion gearing up for their Lethal Leap Year event. It's amazing how much personality is shown. Fandango plays the drunk, sad co-announced and Cena nails an 80s'esque McMahon announcer role. Fandango is hilarious.
The thing is I have no memories of outstanding matches on this type of TV show. Squashes and jobbers. The interviews and promos were the only thing really memorable. Or worth watching.
Very funny... just little subtle stuff that you could appreciate if you lived through those times... I liked how TJ Perkins played the champ with no personality and was terrible on the mic and the Ric Flair KFC commercials were funny. Who played the 'Sea Creature'? Nice seeing the boys just doing something silly and having a good time.
Yeah, the old WWF Superstars and Wrestling Challenge shows from the late 80s and early 90s got very formulaic. You'd have the intro with the announcers and sometimes they'd be there live and others you can tell they weren't because the greenscreen effect used to show them introing the show was pretty obvious. Then you'd have the opening match followed by the WWF report segment with either Mean Gene or Lord Alfred Hayes followed by more matches, then the WWF event center with Sean Mooney hyping local shows. Maybe an interview segment with Brother Love. Then if a PPV was coming up Mean Gene would do the reports. Very rarely did we get big matches. I do remember Demolition dropping the titles to Andre and Haku on one of the 1989 shows when I started watching. I think the WCW shows from the time were just a little more exciting.
If you're over 50 and grew up on WWWF, you can probably still hear Howard Finkel saying "The following is commercial in nature" in your sleep. During the squash matches in the middle 70s, they didn't even bother with commentary for the middle part of the match - that was when the Fink's recorded voice-over would come in to hype the next card at MSG, or your local armory. They'd cut back to the announcers just in time for the finishing move. Then maybe we'd get a word from Bob Backlund, telling us how hard he was training for his upcoming title defense. Maybe, maybe, you got one non-squash thrown on at the very end.
Yeah, I remember those old segments. Mooney reappeared on Raw a few years ago, it was probably one of those "throw back" episodes.
Vince was smart with syndicating shows and sending each market a show taped with promos hyping house shows to the local market. Living in Southern California the shows I watched had event centers for either the Anaheim Convention Center or LA Sports Arena or LA Forum (I think).
Just to add to this.... Backlund never wrestled on TV, unless it was to set up an angle. Also anytime there was a Tag Title match on TV taping the title changed.
How many of you all ever really watched an outlaw promotion? This actually reminded me of Angelo Poffo's promotion. Amateur TV was the rule, They were lucky if they got students to run the cameras. Cena is playing a terrible wrestling announcer, who is only doing it to stay on TV.
