To completely go off topic, another of my Holy Grail oldies was a quirky version of Summertime (the George Gershwin classic) that one of the oldies stations used to play very rarely. Do you know how many versions of that song there are? I thought I'd never find it. All I remembered was that the singer did some incredibly unusual singing on it. Then one day, bingo! I found it by accident on YouTube. I love this version of the song; it absolutely kicks booty. It's down right jaw dropping what this singer does with his voice on this track. As far as reimagining a classic goes, this is even more bizarre than the doo wop version of Blue Moon. From 1966, Billy Stewart and Summertime. Enjoy!
Man, this is a classic R&B hit that I remember from my childhood. The long version has a lot of great scatting.
Steve Hoffman did a great job with it here: Various Artists - Vintage Music Collectors Series, Volumes 7 & 8 - Amazon.com Music
Annoying indeed. Catch the Top 50 songs that week. That week wasn't really that bad musically. There was some good stuff there. Ricky Nelson, a handful of Elvis songs, Everly Bros., etc. The smooth soul of The Platters at No. 2. Ricky Nelson was HUGE. The 2nd biggest-charting artist (following only Elvis) from the late 1950s and early 1960s. He had a good run. I imagine his run would've continued more into 1964 after For You (No. 6, Jan. 1964) if he had better material. The material in 1964-1966 was very weak. Tin Pan Alley, old standards. Kind of like Elvis, who relied on hacknied, well-trod material.
It's a kid's song and it's Christmas time. Is one of your favorite sayings "Bah, Humbug" at this time of year?
California Girls and Like A Rolling Stone were among those kept from No. 1 by I Got You Babe, a Sonny & Cher song, which was No.1 for weeks. Calif. Girls sounded more like a No.1 song than Help Me, Rhonda, which did hit No. 1
Less- charting on the country charts. On the pop charts, Elvis' singles charted throughout the 1960s, into 1965, where he had Top 10 & Top 20 hits. 1966-67 saw smaller hits until his comeback in 1968.
Oldies station programmers, particularly those of the radio chains, do much revisionism. Many hit songs many remember were all but forgotten...
Theme From a Summer Place was also the biggest-charting single of the decade.... or so I once read in a Billboard Hits book, with Hey Jude No. 2. The Twist was No. 1 Hey Jude, No. 2 Theme was No. 3. The Top 20 Billboard Hot 100 Hits of the 1960s
Many artists had double-sided hits. Among the most prolific: -Elvis -Ricky Nelson -Fats Domino -Beach Boys -Beatles
The Twist would go on to be the biggest charting single of the 1960s. The Top 20 Billboard Hot 100 Hits of the 1960s
That was clearly the case for many British Invasion groups too, like Herman's Hermits, The Animals, Dave Clark Five, etc.

Great New Orleans R&B-influenced rock & roll. Some other great songs on that chart that week. The monster RAINDROPS by Dee Clark, which should've hit No. 1.
