Well, it was one of only nine top-20 hits Chuck had in his career, and his second-biggest hit of the 60s. It's his only top-40 hit (aside from "My Ding a Ling") not included on The Great Twenty-Eight. On basis of chart performance, it was a notable omission even before Pulp Fiction gave it renewed popularity.

    No doubt.
It just didn't get the airplay after it's original success over the years on oldie shows and stations.
Even No Particular Place to Go was played a ton from the same year.

That is a great compilation. I have that one as well. It also has more tracks than the domestic 2 cd set Gold/Anthology.

The night before Jerry Garcia died, I was playing tons of Grateful Dead (not something I do often). Did not know he was in the hospital.
Was living in San Francisco at the time. Went into work in the morning and someone mentioned he had passed...

Well, it's a different era and for sure some people don't like it, but it was his ONLY #1 single. My Ding-A-Ling should probably be in there.

If they'd included that song, they would have had to change more than just the "Twenty-Eight" part of the album's title...

Me too, especially Maybellene. Crazy thing is yesterday a friend and I were hanging out talking about Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Elvis, etc., then I went home and saw news had broke 30 minutes earlier that Chuck had died. It was eerie, especially because we are both early-thirties so it isn't like we sit around talking about Chuck Berry very often.

My Ding a Ling wasn't even written by him and it's a lame novelty track that attracted even less than casual fans.

This is an addendum to the 2 cd set that was issued later. These 3 discs contain more tracks than the Chess Box and also contain a few tracks from the Mercury Years.

Four cds of Chess material and booklet is great and has notes about every song. Good luck finding it as it was released in 1994 on Charly and is out of print.

Of course that's a matter of opinion. Along with being his only #1 hit, the song is good for a laugh. Some would say those things make it great.

I don't know... I'm pretty skeptical even Dave Bartholomew's mom would say it's a great song. Sure, that's a matter of opinion, but how many Chuck Berry fans do consider it among his best work? It's musically a simple children's singalong, and lyrically it's at best funny on a Beavis/Butthead level. It's one of the great ironies of Berry's career that despite being one of rock-n-roll's greatest songwriters, his biggest hit was not written by him and was not even much of a song.

  25. 2141

    2141 Forum Resident

It's certainly not his greatest work, I'm sure most would agree (except maybe his accountants ;-) but it's special enough that it shouldn't be written out of his greatest hits albums.
