My original comment was really just a joke about the fact that (hit or not) it's not a great song, so you couldn't call the album "The Great Twenty-Eight" if it's one of the 28 songs. I guess you could add it and call the album "The Great Twenty-Eight plus the Mediocre One" but that's pretty cumbersome for a title.

My vinyl copy of Great 28 is too bright for me. I wonder if other pressings sound better? I prefer my mono Golden Decade. Even better than that is the original 1964 Chess Greatest Hits on the black label which sounds amazing but it's only a single LP. But sounds almost like he's the room with you on some tracks.

As definitive as it gets. Not a single hit or classic missed!

No Little Marie, Merry Christmas Baby & Run Run Rudolph on Anthology/Gold.

Probably the best 2 cd compilation or this one which has more tracks. This one also has some of the Mercury singles.

I could somehow agree on Rudolph. The other two are not close to being classics, imo. Thanks for the suggestion, btw. :)

    All three charted.

Neither one includes Route 66 or Our Little Rendezvous two other favorites of mine.

Yeah, but charted songs, doesn't automatically elevate them to 'classic's' per se.
    Just ask Milli Vanilli... ;-)

True but some of the other tracks they included on Anthology/Gold aren't classics and didn't even chart. Do You Love Me is one example.

Pretty darn good, though fans of "Run Rudolph Run" and "Anthony Boy" might disagree about there not being a single classic missed. :)

Rocks supposedly compiles the more rocking tracks so no Wee Wee Hours or Downbound Train either for example.

or Little Marie and Merry Christmas Baby.

The Reelin' and Rockin' set contains Run Rudolph Run and Little Marie but not Anthony Boy or Merry Christmas Baby.

The third addendum disc You Came A Long Way From St. Louis issued later contains Anthony Boy but not Merry Christmas Baby but it does contain Route 66.

But that's because collections like this shape what casual fans know. It's a vicious cycle. The "Golden Decade" LPs were a more appropriately expansive look at his catalog, whatever their sonic insufficiencies.

Wait! "My Ding A Ling" is already a cover song (written by Dave Bartholomew).

I believer the Dave Bartholomew song was My Tambourine. In any event, it was on the list since Berry popularized it.

I picked up the Chess Box on vinyl for $25 a little over a year ago, and while there are some undesirable mix choices, I'm glad it doesn't have Hey Pedro - if they were limited to 28 songs, I don't know how that made the cut.

In 1954, the Bees on Imperial released a version entitled "Toy Bell". This is the one I was thinking of as Berry originally recorded it as My Tambourine.

For the most part I agree they do shape what casual fans know.
Unless you were a casual fan at the time the artist was current.
Then years later you might remember a song you liked back in the day that wasn't on a particular best of set.
I remember having to buy 2 different best of collections just to get all the hits I wanted by an artist.
In the process I ended up with a bunch of duplicate songs.
