The Hank Williams material is really the straw that stirs the drink, but it's interesting to compare the more comprehensive versions... I wonder why "Shrimp Boats" is a featured track on the Él/Cherry Red release but relegated to bonus track status on the Now Now compilation.

What I mean by complete in this case is the complete popular music soundtrack heard in the movie and not the instrumental stuff such as the Sousa track played by the band, etc.

In other words, the 2 CD set is a no brainer on what to get for a digital representation of this classic soundtrack.

If it weren't for the European public domain, we wouldn't be able to get a definitive representation of all of the popular songs featured in the movie.

Just in the sense that the quality will be a crapshoot.

So Hank Williams is in the public domain but John Philip Sousa is not?

Sousa is in the public domain worldwide composition wise, but the performance of the Sousa song in the movie is copyrighted worldwide as it could have been an arrangement. Anybody can perform Sousa locally but a performance in a movie that is copyrighted worldwide is copyrighted, so European public domain labels can issue the Hank Williams and other commercial popular music recordings in the movie.

I've enjoyed the MGM lp forever so I am glad to see there's a 2-CD collection. One of my all-time favorite soundtracks.

IIRC, it is the standard arrangement. They could have used another recording of the same arrangement that is in the public domain.

Including the legendary Sousa Band recording which can be found here:
John Philip Sousa - The March King - John Philip Sousa Conducts His Own Marches And Other Favorites - An Historical Recording - Amazon.com Music

Instead of ordering direct from Amazon and getting a CD-R, go here: Amazon.com: Buying Choices: The March King - John Philip Sousa Conducts His Own Marches And Other Favorites - An Historical Recording as used pressed CDs of this are cheap.

You can also get this boxed set: Sousa Band - Sousa Marches Played by the Sousa Band: The Complete Commercial Recordings 1897-1930 - Amazon.com Music
