Back in the early days of MTV---you may remember, when they played music videos?---a friend and I were watching one day and a video of Joe Walsh's "Space Age Whiz Kids" from his album "You Break It, You Bought It" came on. Joe had always had a reputation as a funny guy----the line "the smoker you drink, the player you get" still cracks me up---but this song and its video made us wonder what was going thru his mind?!?!?! Here's the infamous clip---

A couple of weeks later we were in a record store----you may remember, when they played records?---and his new album was played over the sound system. We were listening as we were flipping thru the racks and were thinking it was pretty good until the song "I L. B.T.'s" came on. We found ourselves again thinking Joe had lost it---was he trying to commit career suicide??? And years later, after reading Don Felder's biography, I think he was!

So I submit to you---have any of your favorite artists done something that made you wonder what they were thinking? Please to share!

Eagerly buying Elvis Costello's "Goodbye Cruel World" and finding it was career suicide much like the title suggested. Even he has problems with it.
Much as I love Nebraska, I knew nothing about it and bought it the day it came out. I was shocked to get back to my dorm and find Springsteen had gone solo acoustic after the big sounds of The River. I loved it, but totally not what I expected (which I later got with Born in the USA).

i remember thinking that Beck was heading into Weird Al territory with "debra" and its parody of r.kelly. having said that i enjoy the song, which is likely the only thing that really matters.

A modern example would be the band MGMT. After a massive debut and a neo psychedelic followup featuring the masterpiece Siberian breaks they dropped the much anticipated 3rd album. From start to finish it was a big what the f..K have they done? Weak and aimless without the charm it had me questioning my love for the band which is still tainted to this day.

I think I am most fascinated by great artists who become rich and no longer need to think but still manages to create a 'rock holiday' album. Some even one after the other.

The Rolling Stones made quite a few questionable career choices. The worst of these being, IMO, Black & Blue, Undercover, the album cover from Dirty Work, and a lot of their 90's singles. Ironically, a lot of these were very successful, but I wouldn't have expected it.

Frank Sinatra sings... Rod McKuen? A whole album's worth.

Frank sure knew how to pick 'em in the late '60s and early '70s.
