    .. on Comfortably Numb.

I know the 50dp is considered the best around these parts but I just know the click will irk me, on one of my favorite tracks from the album, no less.

So what's the best version of it without the click?

Apologies in advance if this has been discussed.

I currently listen to the 2011 Guthrie remaster which sounds a tad on the veiled side to my ears..

  2. I have never really found a cd of this album I liked.

The vinyl, for me, is the only way I've ever really enjoyed listening to The Wall.

I love the MFSL gold disc. Some consider it bass heavy, and it is boomy, but that works perfectly for this album. And no click. :)

The click is present right at the beginning of the track, right?

I like the '94 EMI remaster, which may or may not have been derived from Doug Sax's remastering. As for pre-"Shine On" discs, there are really only two masterings: the Sony/Columbia mastering with the loud click at the start of Comfortably Numb (and in a few other spots), or the Toshiba/EMI, which is so laid back one could reasonably mistake it for being asleep. All pre-'92 discs are one of these two masterings with slight differences in levels or chapter placement.

agreed. and not really that expensive on the used market considering its limited run and availability.

I have the MFSL and an earlier EU pressing (CDS 7 46036 8). The EU pressing easily bests the MFSL with more dynamics and a more opened top end. It's just clearer (not brighter) sounding all around.

I've dealt with the clicks on the US pre-emph disc as I enjoy the mastering.
No click I think can be found on the old UK Harvest

I quite like the recent re-issues on vinyl and cd. A little on the bright side but overall not to bad.

The click is not on the 50DP 1st pressing as I just listened to it to confirm. Man this one sounds good.

Did they overdub finger clicks on some versions?

    My two faves:

1.) '94 EU EMI remaster - Pink Floyd Archives-E.U. CD Discography
    2.) '85 W. Germany SONOPRESS - Pink Floyd Archives-West German CD Discography

My first-ever Pink Floyd purchase back in 1988 was a basic US-made C2K 36183 (with click and pre-emphasis). Today my ears prefer the above two masterings to my original US copy. The '94 EMI remaster (mine's from the Oh By The Way set) has a bit of 3D-like imaging and instrumental separation that I don't quite hear to the same extent on the SONOPRESS. But I very slightly prefer the EQ of the SONOPRESS, which sounds just a touch more relaxed to my ears. Both are wonderful.

The original Japanese mastering of The Wall contains an audible "digital click" at the very beginning of "Comfortably Numb." The click is present on all issues that share this mastering...with the apparent exception of the 50DP 1st pressing, per Dave in post #14 above.

I think it's because of the boomy bass, which tends to mask the high frequencies. Otherwise, the highs are actually fine.

CD? Original UK Harvest. They had to have used the original master tape. Nothing else sounds like it.

Don't even know why I still have the MFSL.

Thanks everyone for all the replies!

    Oh? That's good to know!

There is pre emphasis on it yes? Will EAC remove it during ripping?

The 50DP and it's exact copy's, the 48DP, original US Columbia all have the clicks on Comfortably Numb at .01, 2:20 and 4:10. In fact all original Columbia CD's of the title do. For many they are so used to them they may not even notice, not to mention they are minor to begin with [at least until after you first really notice them :) ]. I remember the radio station's in my area when I was kid in the late 80's playing the original Columbia mastering clicked 'Numb - I'd guess earlier on than that they used vinyl

The Harvest based masterings and the excellent 1990's Doug Sax masterings (plural) do not have the clicks. Nor does the MFSL if you want to spend decent money on what many including myself consider a questionably EQ'd mastering.

For lot's of information on the Numb clicks:
wall numb click site:stevehoffman.tv - Google Search
wall numb click 50DP site:stevehoffman.tv - Google Search

P.S. EAC will not remove the Pre-Emph while there is software that can perform various estimations and remove accordingly the results vary. I think most will agree just get a nice mastering without the Pre-Emph.

The 50DP, 48DP and all original Columbia masterings of the title have pre-emph. So if you have a non-100% redbook complaint transport, or computer based playback best to spend money on another mastering as if not played back correctly it will sound truly horrid.
