Giving this another spin on a quiet Sunday morning and I think you're right...it's got a good chance of being in the top 10 for the year.

So far this year, my list looks like this:

    Minus the Bear - Voids
    Kendrick Lamar - DAMN.
The New Pornographers - Whiteout Conditions
    Elbow - Little Fictions
    Run The Jewels - RTJ3
Cloud Nothings - Life Without Sound

With a number of runner-ups (FJM, Bonobo, XX, Ninet, Big Sean, Temples, Eisely etc). So this list could of course change.

I kinda gave up on Elbow a few albums back but all the good reviews of the latest makes me think it's time for a re-evaluation.

^Really like Little Fictions too. Will check out the new New Pornographers. I'm hoping the upcoming Ride and Slowdive albums would be worthy of this list.

After a seemingly slow start to the year for new releases I've picked up the pace a little.

    • Alison Krause - Windy City
    • Michael Chapman - 50
    • John Mayer - The Search For Everything
    • Rhiannon Giddens - Freedom Highway
    • Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives- Way Out West
    • Jessi Colter - The Psalms
The Alison and Jessi are okay but I really like the other four. The Michael Chapman has remained the best of the year but this new John Mayer may challenge. A really country-folk year with not a rocker in sight and no jazz or blues either.

Don't know if it'll wind up a fave of the year, but there is a very good album by the female duo Overcoats called Young streaming over at NPR. Kind of electro/minimal pop that hasn't been overcooked. It has excellent hooks and their harmonies are truly dreamy.

Just the opposite for me, I'm usually pretty heavy in the Americana, but this year is all about jazz and rock and ambient and electro-pop and indie and punk and post-punk so far at my place, no Americana in sight except maybe for some of the Bruce Langhorne tribute (but it really falls mainly into experimental), and since it looks like we are doing some second quarter update lists, here's a quick dozen of my favorites in alpha order, the Jacaszek record is on top for now, probably will stay there, see signature, the Yazz Ahmed record is incredible, final version on CD/2-LP releases May 12, reminds me I should probably get in a pre-order for the vinyl, I've only streamed the first 3 chapters on Spotify so far but love it, see upthread for more info ... All Them Witches - Sleeping Through the War
    Coldharbourstores - Wilderness
    Jacaszek - Kwiaty
    Milk Music - Mystic 100's
Modern English - Take Me to the Trees
Nadine Khouri - The Salted Air
Seasurfer - Under The Milkyway... Who Cares?
    Vagabon - Infinite Worlds
Various - The Hired Hands: A Tribute to Bruce Langhorne
    Venn - Runes
    Wear Your Wounds - WYW
Yazz Ahmed - La Saboteuse (First three chapters are streaming, final version with all 4 chapters will release on May 12)

Funny, but when I listened to the new album called "Room 29", by Jarvis Cocker/Chilly Gonzales, I thought "Now this is the album that Scott Walker SHOULD be making these days!"

Good call. I like this album. It's got a real Gainsbourg vibe.

Arca's self titled album from this month had me reeled in in seconds, a rare feat these days.

Really looking forward to this one. Catching him in northern va in may. Robyn has been on an incredible roll since Spooked. Also, all his stuff with peter buck and friends is great, as is the recent Alejandro Escovedo with Buck and friends. great records.

Ordered this recently. It's coming out on vinyl on RSD in Holland. Very laid back, mainly acoustic, folk/jazz sound. Shades of Joni Mitchell and Sade.

It is an exceptionally good record. Everything about it is so impressive - material, arrangements, production. I believe he spent longer than usual putting it together and the care and attention to detail really shows. I'd go as far to say it's a late-period masterpiece. For die-hard fans it's a real treat.
