I bought this one yesterday. These sonic landscapes are truly enjoyable, so I might buy another of Eno's ambient albums today .
In addition to the GD's Dick's Picks 34, Miles Davis - At Newport 1955 - 1975 (Bootleg Vol. 4) Disc 3: 1966/67 Dylan & The Band - The Basement Tapes Mofi SACD
Like I promised yesterday, I bought some more ambient albums by Eno. This time, in collaboration with Harold Budd. Atmospheric beauty.
Vandermark/Drake/McBride (aka Spaceways Incorporated) Thirteen Cosmic Standards by Sun Ra and Funkadelic. Now that I've overcome my initial disappointment, counterpart to the rush I felt when I thought it was a recording of Sun Ra backed by Funkadelic, I am really enjoying this. My only minor quibble is I would have liked to hear the rock tunes a bit more jazzed up - structurally they are very faithful to the originals, well done in itself because they effectively reproduce the multi-textured sound of funkadelic with only three instruments (and maybe that's the point.) A good point of entry to some contemporary jazz if nothing else.
Good Job!!! NOW is the time to get on to the real deal with Mr. Vandermark & the *great* Hamid Drake!!! Go directly to DKV Trio Live in Wels & Chicago. The "K" is for Kent Kessler and he is on the double bass and the year is 1998 and the performances (especially from The Velvet Lounge on disc 2) are incredible. Hamid is breaking into his prime here. The grooves are invented and beyond genre. Really no one like him. Last 2 tracks from the Velvet are 43 minutes plus of one of the finest examples of post-Coltrane free jazz. A few of us call it "the music" or something as no one has found an apt label for the vast variety of modern creative out of the box free jazz. The Chicago strain is a big part of it. Very glad you've been exposed to the great man. Next step is with the great tenorman Fred Anderson with his long time drummer. I suggest the expertly recorded 2 CD set on eremite with William Parker on bass - recorded live at Johnson State in Vermont in December 2004. You may never hear jazz drumming the same ever again. One day you're coming due south to NYC to see drummers like this live up close & personal. No one more exciting from close up in a small room than Hamid Drake. Well except for Nasheet Waits, Tom Rainey, Andrew Cyrille, Ches Smith, Gerry Hemingway, Han Bennink, and of course, Randy Peterson.
Saw this guy this weekend with a full band. What a talented young artist. The sound of aloha comes through in any format or style. Paradise is more than just a place So wait on this moment Wait on this day to be yours.
