Hmm. In Time sound good. Maybe he is starting to like a different sound. Or the band is. Or, his hearing is starting to change. Who knows. And most of us hate modern mastering, but they still compress the heck out of it, so I guess being in demand doesn't always mean giving audiophiles a sound we like.

If there was ever a response based on pure speculation, this would be it. But, I used to own a recording studio so a bit of experience is involved. Here is what I thought before I heard their new album. And it still could be the case. Regarding MONO, what I heard is that one of the band members was listening to some old music and liked the vibe of the mono sound. I think mic placement and type, plus other elements, were critical to that classic sound. Why else do some music from that era sound so bad, while others are breathlessly beautiful? Kinda like what we hear now with more modern recordings...if the engineer and mixer knows what they are doing, and cares, and the band wants a great sound, that's what they get. I don't know if they had already started the recording process with MONO or not prior to deciding to making it a mono recording, but I am going to speculate that their engineer was not specifically trained to produce a mono recording, like the engineers of the 50's and 60's. And I don't know if he recorded them as a band or individually, but they are good enough to certainly be recorded all at once as a band, and then overdubs can be done. I suspected from the start that this turned from a mid stream traditional recording into a mono project, and that it was likely simply mixed and mastered in mono after being recorded in a traditional fashion. Which I doubt was how the very good mono recordings were done...I'm sure a lot of planning was done with mono recordings. And instruments placed differently. With MONO, you have some obvious elements that should have been brought up much more in the mix, so that is why I'm concluding a mono sound wasn't necessarily planned at the beginning. So, perhaps an inexperienced enginner/mixer with the mono sound (perfectly understandable given the era) is what what my guess would be.

However, that doesn't explain imo the veiled blanket over the speakers sound we've been getting over the last three albums. I could live with the rest if the audio was at least studio quality, which I really feel it isn't. These sound like quickly done recordings, except the quality of the songs don't suggest that. If I were the band, I would be pretty pissed off. It isn't a subtle sound! The basic mixes are bad, and the overall sound quality is terrible. I would be giving Niko a pass if I suggested he is using subpar monitors...that would explain a whole lot. That's exaclty what it sounds like to me. But he's too experienced to do something like that. After hearing the new album, and feeling Time was a good recording, plus other recordings Niko has done are obviously fine, I have to suggest Raul likely likes this sound. Why I have no idea, but I can't imagine this is an accident. And that live album...that is just plain awful. They should be embarrassed by the bootleg sound quality imo. I wish someone in the band would try and get things back to where they were, but clearly there is a strong personality within their organization that wants this sound. I know we are all pretty geeky about that issue around here, but when you read review after review over on Amazon complaining about that issue, you know it's pretty bad...most people don't care. I don't recall ever reading so many sound quality reviews within general album reviews, especially on Amazon.

He's got ATC 50 monitors at his own studio. I've never heard them, but a lot of people I respect love them.

Excellent thoughts. Perhaps that's the issue. Unfortunately, your 2nd paragraph sums up where I'm at in regards to these last few albums. I haven't bought the live one, but will likely only do so if I can find it on ebay or a used store for under $4 or $5.

Well, ya know, just trying to come up with a reason without directly blaming him. Running out though! I think Raul just likes that sound, but lord only knows why. I did have a few bands that would just let me do my thing when I mixed, and were fine with whatever. So, you never know. It's none of my business, but I don't know that I would buy any more albums from them and I kinda think they want fans to do that. I was just reading the reviews on Amazon and no one has mentioned the sound quality being subpar, though there was a ton of that for MONO reviews, so maybe it's just me. Still, Time was the last good sounding album imo.

If you don't like the sound on MONO, you will hate the live album too. I played it once and probably will never listen to it again. And it has nothing to do with them, it's just not fun to listen to. MONO isn't either, but the songs are just so good I put up with it. I like to hear albums that also sound good sonically. I can live with "ok" if the songs are good. Awful I can't live with, I have invested too much time and money in my system to put albums on by a band that doesn't really care about how their recordings sound. I know they used to, at least my ears tell me that. And to see the awesome sound equipment they had to work with, I just don't understand.

Aside from the new album by The Mavericks, former member Robert Reynolds is releasing a new solo CD. You can pre-order the CD in addition to autographed items and artwork such as flower pins made of material from Robert’s stage-worn shirts.

Poor Robert. That guy sadly fell off the rails causing the band to have to dismiss him and he was very talented. An old friend of mine was working at his cousins FORD dealership, in a small town here in Ohio, about 15 years ago and for some reason, Robert came all the way up from Nashville to buy a truck from him. I never bothered to get the full story on that one, but that was back when I was working in country radio and he just mentioned that some guitar player named Reynolds from The Mavericks bought a FORD truck from me. I'm sadly not in touch with my old friend anymore or I would get the full story, which has to be a good one? I wish Robert the best, but that "Pledge" page looks like a sad "I'm selling anything and everything to survive" page.

As for the new album, I really want to like it, but as much as I hate to say it, I find that this band has said about everything that they can say and now they just seem to be re-writing the same songs over and over again. Don't misunderstand me, as they are good songs, but just how many "All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down's", do we really need?

Raul Malo is one of my favorite voices, but I feel that he has missed his opportunity to have real success with it. This band, no matter how talented they are, has always fell through the cracks with the masses, on both radio and in sales. Only those of us who are keen to them, know just great they are, but it sadly will never be big enough to matter. Raul should try to become another Sinatra, as I feel that he has the voice to do it. Get with a big producer like David Foster or Humberto Gatica and get in a room with strings and some great classics and a few new self penned tunes and see what happens. If he got a promotional push from a label like Verve or Warner Brothers, like a Diana Krall, Michael Buble or Andrea Bocelli album would get, I believe that Raul could finally get his fame, that I feel he deserves?

Definitely. If they were to go the country route, then it would be nice to see them work again with legendary country songwriter Kostas. He wrote and co-wrote many of the band's biggest hits in the 90s. As the band began to distance themselves from the "Nashville" scene, they didn't work with Kostas on their albums in 2003 or 2011 and beyond. Ironically, Kostas doesn't even live in Nashville and he's written songs for a wide range of genres and artists including Etta James and Candye Kane.

Raul's solo albums were enjoyable and like you, I often wondered if he could reach that exact level of fame you described. However, he's been outspoken on making music for the sake of art and not for the purpose of maximizing record sales. I'm not certain he would be willing to surrender that much control over projects. Also, ageism is another factor and being over 50 could make it more difficult for him to meet the criteria of what the major record label identifies as demographic appeal.

I've been so negative I didn't want to pile on more regarding the album itself, but I agree. I love having it, love the artwork too. The cover for vinyl really is nice. But the songs sound more like outtakes (except for maybe the opening track) and it all sounds awfully familiar, like they have run out of ideas. I think others should be contributing more to writing. Most bands run out of steam by now, so nothing against them. A good producer would likely get them at least one more great album. But they own their record company, and those producers you mentioned are awfully expensive for a band that likely doesn't sell more than a few hundred thousand albums at best these days. This is so off the rails, but for Air Supplies last major label album Humberto was brought in. Wow, what a difference. Not that it made any with the public, it still stiffed, which is the problem with doing that at the tail end of a career. The public has moved on and a lot of money is wasted on an album that won't sell. But you're totally right! And Raul got his fame, and well over his 15 minutes. He's been around a long time, which is kind of rare. The money is in touring, and I hear they do that well. So, maybe they need to take a break from recording and get some inspiration out in the field for a while, as much as I would hate not seeing new material. But, this new material just doesn't sound that "new" to me. He's out of steam.

I will seek out his solo albums, for some reason I didn't know he did any. Which is his best? Regarding his age, I think he looks great on stage and I'm not sure that will hurt him. And since they have their own label, he doesn't have to worry about that so much, but I get what you are saying. However, not having to worry about the public when recording is a fine receipe for making albums that are not commercial. If he doesn't care, that's his right of course, but I would say we're hearing the results of that thought lately. But, MONO isn't really that old and I think it was a masterpiece, aside from the sound. I hope he can return to those roots.

Can't remember if I've mentioned it on here or not, but they do a cover of Pink Floyd's US AND THEM that is absolutely terrific. If I had the money and time, I'd go on the Delbert McClinton Sandy Beaches Cruise. I love Delbert and The Mavericks. I'll bet this is a great atmosphere to have several days of this great music.
