There are a few singers and bands, etc., that when they have a new release I don't need to preview it first, I just get it.
This dawned on me with Ray Davies new album. I wanted it. Period.

The same with the Beatles, Paul McCartney, Radioead, Brian Wilson , and several others I won't bother to list .
Who do you like enough that their new releases ( new material or archive) are a done deal up front for you ?

My exception to this would be the zillionth greatest hits packagings of the same old songs with nothing new added or no upgraded sound. :D

A few years back it would have been a long list, but in recent years I've taken several of my favourite artists (including Keith Jarrett, Tori Amos, John Zorn and Umphrey's McGee) off autobuy and have decided to wait for at least some of their albums to come at a lower pricepoint. I buy most of the Steven Wilson releases but not everything.

I think that the composer Sorabji comes closest: I don't have every single CD in the catalogue for him, but anything new would be an automatic preorder.

It's kind of funny because the artists I grew up with such as Springsteen and Neil Young-whose latest albums I automatically bought for decades , I now wait to buy--if I even buy at all. But artists I got into later such as Steven Wilson and Opeth? I buy automatically.

    It's weird I guess.

All of my favorite artists, really. I don't want to give a number of artists that it would be, because usually no one believes you, but keep in mind that a high percentage of my favorite artists are older and don't necessarily release new material very often.

Also, I don't automatically buy compilations or rereleases (even with bonus tracks).

Nada Surf are coming close to falling off the list, but I'll probably continue to bite for a couple more releases. Same for Matthew Sweet. I loved the Japanese album, but that was the last one that was consistently good.

For me, it's not nearly as many as one might think. RL Burnside. James Booker. The Master Musicians of Jajouka. The Meters (with all four/five guys, not counting side projects). Every so often when Sly Stone shows up and puts something out as a teaser or weird thing on some strange label, like that weird album he did with two new tracks, I usually check it out (bought the last couple things as just downloads, though). There is a type of strange Indonesian parlor music called kronkong where there's only been a couple of commercial records of it made available in the West over the years, but it's fascinating stuff and I would buy anything in that genre, by any artist, if I could easily find it.

I must really like the guy, but RL Burnside is probably the only one that I would likely buy a compilation of stuff that I mostly already had, just for the heck of it and for completists' sake, to keep the Burnside party rolling.

My wife and I have a couple of close friends who are musicians, some of which are even established or sorta well known, we already have the back catalog and then they usually give us promo copies of their new releases. Not sure if that counts, though.

The only ones i can think of that are actually producing new music are the shoegaze bands of the early 90s that are coming back so ive bought the slowdive, lush and ride releases, (well pre-ordered), without hesitation.

If there was any new releases from either the cure, the smiths, led zep, catherine wheel, adorable and a host of bands i loved from the 80s-90s i would gladly buy them. If, in the words of morrissey, its just another

    "Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package !
    Re-evaluate the songs
    Double-pack with a photograph
Extra Track (and a tacky badge)"

Then i have no real interest in it.

Neil Young is one though that may be coming to an end. A few of his recent releases have gotten minimal play. Eric Clapton is one where I buy every new release. I will keep it up with him, he doesn't put out two new ones a year like Neil. Bob Dylan is an automatic buy but I have had enough of the American Songbook.

Well, that's the whole point of the thread: I'm asking people who they feel that way about. Yours, if you have any ?
