I've had the same experience when comparing a 320kbps CBR MP3 to a FLAC: I can sometimes hear a very slight difference but not enough to tell which is which. One factor is that I don't listen to my music through the air via speakers, only through headphones. It is more likely that I could tell the difference if I listened to them through actual loudspeakers.

Most of my CD collection is ripped to AAC 256kbps. I didn't know there was a difference until a few years ago. I thought since it was the default setting it was the best. I was mad when I found out however I really don't hear a difference.

Kind of like the VHS/Beta wars, I went for mp4 myself. It had that vision thing going on.

FLAC is not natively supported in the Apple universe... I am sure there is an excellent reason however... ;)

So it's dead due to their licensing being terminated?

IOW, they can't make money off it any more, so they're abandoning it. Figures.

I would have thought it was the other way round - if you're using quality headphones. You usually pick up more details in music when using headphones.

I can't hear a difference between that level and any format above. I have nice headphones and have A/B'd any number of WAV vs MP3 320 files and I can't tell which is which. I doubt many people can.

I'm sure we'll be able to play MP3s at our funeral.

Yeah, it went from 128Kbps before it went in, to 320Kbps a few years later- it's just so sad.

    :)

Just called my local record store and they said they don't buy mp3s. What the hell are we supposed to do?

Some folks invested a great deal of money in mp3s, only to be told they are worthless, intangible goods. What do we do now?

Your right Tommy. Philes spend an incredible amount of money improving the audio signal but many won't go the extra mile for MP3.

Remember when Apple sued Dennis Hopper because he put his iTunes collection in his will? Apple used the AAC licensing agreement with Fraunhofer to argue that Hopper didn't actually own the songs--Apple did.

So now that MP3 is license-free, you can will your collection to your kids!

I tend to use good headphones like Koss Sportapros, but not extremely expensive ones. I've taken a look at a few that are supposed to be excellent but before I plunk down a large amount of money I have to make sure they are comfortable to wear. I've had a number of good-sounding headphones that become uncomfortable after a short period of time. Added to that is the tendency of expensive headphones to focus on the bass to the detriment of everything else.
