    Just ordered three of these ..... 4/8, 4/26, 5/26.
Will hopefully grab a couple more as finances and availability permit.
Couldn't risk waiting for sales as stocks seem to be low at dead.net

This thread was a big help ...... thanks. :edthumbs:

5-23 has been my vote for the past year or so, though each has something to recommend it.

The other day I was on Ebay wondering what the most expensive/most bidded cds are and the majority of listings were GD discs. The Europe 72 box set for one is commanding big bucks. Smart move on your part.

Yeah, prices are getting up there for these individual '72 sets. I'll hopefully grab 2 more from dead.net asap ........ maybe 4/14 & 4/24 from the dates remaining.
It seems that dead.net is the only place that has stock at a decent price.

Get 5/3 if you have to pick one. Much stronger show on the whole in my opinion.

Totally 5/3 if I had to grab only one. It has a magic sound to me as well; don't know why but seemingly a bit more magic than 5/4.

From what I remember 5/3 has one of the most adventurous Truckin->Other One performances of the tour while the Dark Star from 5/4 is "just" typically great '72 Dead.

I tried to grab 5/3 awhile back on dead.net but it was sold out. One of the first E72 shows to sell out if memory serves.

  16. The Dark Star > Sugar Magnolia on 4/8 is probably my favorite piece of music from the whole tour.
My memory tells me that I prefer the mix on Stepping Out With The Grateful Dead, to the one on the Europe '72 box set.
    Can anyone speak to this?
Maybe my favorite mix is the one from my old bootleg copy?
Are there 3 (or more) mixes out there of that sequence?

  17. Pretty sure the Steppin' Out mix is superior to my ears.
Keith's keys are more predominant on the older (pre-E'72 box), deluxe mixes.

As you mention, yes, unfortunately the E72 box has Keith mixed down consistently. I can still enjoy the more guitar-centered mixes but it is good that there are alternative mixes around for most of the shows.

For 4/8/72 there is a Charlie Miller version of the whole show (I'm guessing it is the Stepping Out mix or a similar one) and then there is a mix Jerry Garcia himself did of "Dark Star" in May 1972 for the Glastonbury Fayre album, that I haven't heard.

I couldn't say, Steppin' Out is the only version I've ever listened to. It sounds good to me. The band sounds like an approaching rainstorm.

Definitely more Keith and a better mix on Steppin out.
But, the other mixes aint bad. Actually they sound very good. It's just that Steppin out is even better

I think the poll is really accurate. My top 5 are 4/8, 4/14, 5/3, 5/7, and 5/26, all of which are in the top 7 of the poll. Gotta love crowdsourcing. :)

The only show I haven't heard from your top five is Amsterdam (5/10). It's going to be great to hear it finally when I get to it (I'm going in order very slowly so as to not burn out on first sets and I've got the epic Frankfurt (4/26) show up next).

Back when I did this, I put 4/26, 5/10, 5/11, and 5/26, and apparently punted because I couldn't decide on the fifth. Today, I'd keep 4/26 and 5/26, and probably 5/11, but 5/10 is out and I'd put 4/8 in its place and also include 4/16, the Aarhus show, which has become one of my absolute favorites. But really, any time I'm listening to a Europe '72 show, that one might as well be my favorite. The whole tour is THAT good.
