I'm not sure I ever saw the movie. Probably - I'd see anything back in that era once it got to the $1 theater - but I admit I have zero memory of it...

Definitely alone thinking Night of the Hunter should be seen in standard aspect ratio, but the proof is on the screen if someone wants to go look

 

While I wouldn't say I loved it, Mike and Dave need a Wedding Date is quite funny. I laugh at it knowing it's lowbrow and appealing to someone not ordinarily expecting much realistic dialogue.

 

The Perfect Getaway.

 

I recall an actual theater standee of this which was a battery operated spring with cardboard cut outs of her and the horse! I think it was soon after this (Mullholland Falls was the tipping point, I think) that she started starving herself and doing whatever else surgically. She's a good actress and she did transition to being taken seriously because of it, but my God, she was the sexiest girl in the world back then. Just unbelievable.

 

I really enjoyed Dark Shadows. I did not expect to like it, after all the horrible reviews, so I guess it helped that my expectations where really low.
Great cast, and awesome soundtrack.

 

I think it's an entertaining film. I even bought the Alan Silvestri score.

I stand by my choice.

Just about every cheesy 70's disaster movie. I think the only one I've never seen is the Airport movie with the Concorde (Airport '79?)- that one sounds bad from everything I've heard/read about it. But, yeah, I even found merit in The Swarm and When Time Ran Out...

When "Swarm" came out in 1978, I was 11 and loved disaster movies, but that one? Not so much! IIRC, even then I thought it was silly and not very effective!

"Airport '79" really is terrible. It might be "fun" if you like campy "so bad it's good" films, but it's objectively awful:

I saw the movie at the drive-in during its original release. While watching it I suddenly realized it was based on a French novel I read on my own in highschool: You Shall Know Them, by Vercors (1953).

 

Howard the Duck (1986)
Super Mario Bros. (1993)

But neither quite enough to actually buy.

 

I think "Howard" is pretty awful, but I think I liked "SMB" when I saw it in theaters.

Should probably see it again and decide if it holds up...

 

What I mainly remember about Super Mario Bros. is everyone in it yelling at the top of their lungs from beginning to end.

The Black Cauldron (1985). The history of the making of it is a lot more interesting though. I'm still waiting for an Blu-ray release with the 12 minutes of footage that would've gotten the film a PG-13 or an R rating.
Lassie (1994). Has one of the best soundtracks I've ever seen in a film. Has "In My Life" by the Beatles (original recording) included.

 

John Carter was a big-budget sci-fi epic that barely broke even. While it wasn't going to win any Oscars, it was entertaining.

 

People should see it for all the scenes of a buck-nekked Anne Hathaway.

That film had me in tears, and would anyone who had a complicated relationship with an extraordinary father.

 

Sphere (1998, Levinson)
So called sci-fi geeks - and just about everyone I mention it to - hates it. I find it amusingly droll. Essentially, a bunch of high performance professional nuerotics get a lethal look in the mirror (sphere). Not sure if it's what novelist, Michael Crichton, intended but that's what happened to his story.

 

No one really likes this film, in particular the English dub.

While I'm a purist and hate dubbed movies, I make an exception for Godzilla 2000. The English dub is actually pretty good and adds humor to a movie that's too solemn for it's own good. Yeah, I know, it changes the director's intent but come on, this is no masterpiece to begin with. Also, if you listen to the commentary, the work that went into editing the movie and adding some sound effects and musical cues is pretty impressive...and effective.
