Apparently these are becoming more and more popular - and not just for rock n roll. I have an opportunity to go on a Moody Blues cruise in January '18.

Can any of you share your experiences? Would you do it again?

i haven't gone yet. been tempted a few times. but there are some youtube vids that you gotta see.
it may have been cruise to the edge, not sure but search under "renaissance - cruise" and it might pull up.
it is annie haslam and renaissance on a cruise which i think was ctte and they are playing on a stage outside in the pool area and it looks like they are in a typhoon.
i have never seen a band look so uncomfortable playing in my life. all you can hear is the wind through the mikes.
    weather is a factor.

I attended the 2012 cayamo cruise which is mainly singer songwriter. It was an amazing time. Over 120 sets of music in a week taking place all over the ship. I know several folks who have been on these now and most had a great time.

For a cruise like you've described with singer/songwriters and serious musicians, I can see that it would be worthwhile. Almost like a workshop perhaps?

But many I've seen advertised are "oldies cruises" with bands that likely have members in their 70's or older and their popular hits were 50 years ago or more. And no doubt the passengers are that age too. I am close to that age (so it isn't an ageist thing) but I cannot image going on such a cruise. I've been to a few oldies concerts (some good, some not so good) but a few hours of nostalgia would be about all I could handle. To be ship-bound and have it thrust at you for days would be torture to me.

I don't like the idea of these at all, I'm afraid. They strike me as somewhat desperate. I saw a YT video of one that Kiss did, and talk about destroying the mystique.

Ehhh. What mystique? They haven't had mystique since about 1980. They already proved that their critics were right all along about them when they started masquerading their former drummer and former guitar tech in Peter and Ace's makeup. They've got no shame at all. Might as well milk that cow for all they can before Paul Stanley's voice finally gives out completely.

Sounds like it could be fun if you enjoy the Moodies and cruises. Lots of info online I'd expect yay and nay. I'd suspect it would help if you're a 'cruise' type of person which I am not. Have a great time if you decide to take the plunge, so to speak! While not a cruise person, I would like to be aboard this boat as David cuts a few tunes...

Thanks, all. The input is helpful. I've been a big Moodies fan since the late '60s. Normally I wouldn't consider a cruise, but how much longer can the three of them keep performing? Who knows which chance is your last chance?

Cruises may have great music acts but the concept is too damn hilarious, like Mannheim Steamroller on PBS Pledge Drive Saturday Night (which happened yesterday).

I was skeptical until my first cayamo. Now, I've done 6. I can't speak for others but cayamo is always a magical musical experience. The absence of distractions for fans and musicians, no next gigs to get to for the musicians, good weather, multiple gigs within minutes of each other, and continual collaborations between favorite musicians, make for an incredible experience that you won't realize anywhere else. This year, for example, there was an outdoor in the Caribbean air memorial for Guy Clark that started with Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell on the stage together telling stories and playing some Guy songs. After multiple musicians came out each performing favorite Guy songs, the show ended with Steve Earle and Rodney Crowell playing desperados waiting for a train. Other favorites moments included Aoife O Donovan, Sarah Jarosz and Stuart Duncan playing a couple cuts together, and Richard Thompson coming out and playing a song with the Wainwright family.

A couple years back , Larry Campbell was bandleader for the Levon Helm memorial.

I could go on. I can't speak for any other music cruise but cayamo is incredible.

We love cruising and prefer Carnival for precisely this reason; I'm 50 and my wife is 61 and we hate being on a ship with a bunch of old farts like us :)

The oldies station in town always seems to have one they are pushing in print, over the air, even on tv. Really 'old' seasoned acts, and some regional acts.
The only ones I could ever see working out are the songwriter ones like Dave sees, where spontaneity is possible.

it really was a good time. I wish I could go every year. the performers have their own area on board but many times you will see them around the ship. I ran into keb mo in the buffet three times I think. someone I know saw Lucinda Williams in the casino and ended up hanging with her at the bar. after the bands are done many concert goers have their own jam sessions in the bars deep into the night. I took part in that a couple of times. sometimes the headliners will join in with them.

This whole cruise thing is new to me. I'm guessing that the "Edge" in Cruise to the Edge is Graham Edge?

No, it's the cruise headlined by Yes. Bit like the Moodies cruise but a lot more prog-centric.

Oh. I get it now - as in "Close to the Edge". Yes is my other favorite British band. Once again, thanks for the input.

I never even considered these before this thread. And as a semi pro musician, I'd love to get in on some of the late night jam sessions. Thanks for posting.
