"Pieces Of Eight" will be great. "Alpha" will sound like crap as always but I'll buy it anyway.

AF already released the debut a few years ago.

Audio Fidelity already released a gold CD of the debut album.

Third times a charm Keith for Alpha?
The flat 2014 Japan sucked, the recording for this album is horrible, hopefully AF can add some warmth to this ice-floe of a mess...
Thanks, will be giving this one a go

Yes and YES! Super stoked about Alpha, as it really needs a good mastering.

And if I reccall, Pieces Of Eight was part of the second wave of the old Styx cd issues and didn't sound as good as the first group, which were Audio Masters +. Really glad AF is doing this title.

What's the deal with Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight? They have not been remastered, at least in a way that is easily obtainable and affordable (like, for example, Kansas's or Journey's albums have). I once bought some "hi fidelity" gold CD issue of Grand Illusion that to my ears was a bit harsh, and certainly not better than the old original release you still see in record stores. I believe I read somewhere that the masters were lost, which makes Styx's recent two-fer live recordings of those albums in their entirety very welcome. I have a recent Styx greatest hits CD which sounds pretty good to me, so I wonder if they had the original masters for that?

I bought the Japanese remaster of Pieces Of Eight late last year, but I'll definitely get the AF SACD.

The high fidelity Gold CD was probably the Audio Fidelity release.

Yes the second wave of cd releases for Styx. Sound like crap compared to the original vinyl. PO8 and Equinox need a great remastering job. Hope PO8 sounds better than the current old USA cd. Kevin did the previous other 2 Styx releases.

Alpha I think needs help like in a remix. If Kevin is doing this I hope he has some fairy dust around because the CD and LP are pretty thin sounding. In other words it needs a lot of help. IMO of course.

I thought the recent SHM-CD Styx remasters were well regarded.

It was mixed down digitally and you know how digital of that time sounded... I've listened to digital recordings and mixes from the 80's mastered by Mr. Hoffman and they got new life.

I just have the old USA issues so I don't know about the Japan releases. The old vinyl sounds excellent so my hope is this new PO8 remaster can sound much better.

Ignorant question, but without a sacd player these releases on a cd player are just glorified (hopefully, good) remasters without the added audio (surround) layer?

Don't think surround is a factor here. More likely hybrid redbook and SACD (hi rez).

    Was this Steve's remastering?
