Just about everyone--I'm not a completist, so when an acts stops being interesting, I check out--it's not like there aren't thousands of albums out there I don"t have a copy of.

Your list is somewhat perplexing, you give Bowie some consideration but the police and Floyd an early cut off? I mean the police were solid to the end and Floyd at least to dark side if not further....especially if you let Bowie get to let's dance?!??

I stopped after Green as well. Picked up again with New Adventures but they changed again for the worst after that. Also gave Collapse a shot as well. I stick with the IRS years and a smattering post-Green.

I cut everyone off after their first demo tape.

Not really, but some of these don't seem far off from that.

Mercury Rev - All Is Dream. Their albums after that just don't work for me, and I've tried. I wanted to like them, but I just couldn't.

I'm not any kind of a completist and by that I mean even if I've liked a period of any band or artist more than likely I've gotten 2, 3 or 4 albums in a row then skipped 1 or 2 and maybe gotten another 1 or 2. There certainly has come a point with many where I've not purchased anymore and maybe that's a cut off line but I've been surprised by some and ended up buying another title I've liked like Donovan's Beat Cafe. Nothing for 30+ years and then whammo something I like.

That could be true. I know I feel that way about people saying they gave up on Dylan...whenever. (Dylan's discography is pockmarked with fans' cut-off albums.) But I suppose part of this has to do with how much you trust an artist. My trust in Dylan wobbled after Knocked Out Loaded but I stuck with him, and was rewarded for it. My cut-off albums are as much about when I stopped trusting the artists' judgement as when I stopped enjoying their music.

And everyone gets into or out of bands/artists for their own unique reasons.
Let's discuss other people's poor taste in music, shall we?

Didn't you post this about the Police?

For Bowie, I would say stop at Let's Dance then resume at 1. Outside.

  17. I stopped buying after Abacab, but haven't listened to anything after Wind and Wuthering in a coon's age.

Danzig "Danzig 4" - He put out an album that sounded like a poor man's Nine Inch Nails after that and I gave up.

Michael Jackson "Bad" - We found out about his weirdness and his music got, well...bad.

The Beatles "Meet the Beatles" - They never lived up to the promise. ;)

These cut off points represent where I ceased to be a rabid fan:

    Genesis - S/T (aka Shapes)
Steely Dan - Two Against Nature
    Rush - Signals
    Talking Heads - Little Creatures
    REM - Life's Rich Pageant

There are really no firm cut-off albums for me in regards to artists I like, although I do have certain "comfort zones" when it comes to some artists (for instance, I either love or like most the Stones output up through "Emotional Rescue", but don't have the same level of attachment to anything after). Yet even that example isn't particularly firm - I'm always open to coming across a few of their potential gems post 1980. It's just that I don't go out of my way to seek them out.

To complicate matters, you can even have precise pockets of interest within the bigger pocket. For instance, going back to the Stones example, I LOVE the pocket from "Between The Buttons" through "Exile On Main St". Everything else surrounding those albums, I simply like. But now I'm really wandering off the trail here... :)
