These were not only B-Sides, but actual A Side Singles that never made it to Album. Great songs like "I Want To Hold Your Hand", "She Loves You", "I Feel Fine", "Day Tripper", "Paperback Writer", "Penny Lane" etc.....

But I'm at a loss to what to call it!

I agree- I think the covers are boring and pretty unattractive. I would have put one (or more) pictures of The Beatles on the cover(s) and back inlays.

Singles Going Steady would have worked for me. Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

Funny that you call it a B-Sides Collection when it's like 40% A-Sides. I'd say Non-Album Track Collection would be a much more accurate descriptor.

As for alternate title, how about:

    "All The Rest"

I'm used to non-album tracks being the B-Sides of singles (where the A-Side is an album track) so I keep forgetting that The Beatles put out a lot of singles where one or both sides were non-album tracks. :) In my mind "B-Side" = non-album track even though I know that wasn't always the case.

I think they should have released the US Hey Jude and and U.K. Collection Of Beatle Oldies as standard "cannon" albums and tacked on the orphans tracks as bonuses..

Blegh... The whole point of Past Masters was to collect the oddity tracks together in chronological order in a nice neat package. I much prefer Past Masters as it's presented to Hey Jude or Oldies.

I never minded the name. Nor the concept. It meant you could get all of the Beatles tracks in a standardized catalog with pretty much no overlap (technically speaking).

I also think the Past Masters sequence provides a unique listening perspective - rather than the albums or Red/Blue, you get to hear the Beatles' growth by way of singles and EP tracks, several of which haven't been played into the ground since they're b-sides or EP/compilation tracks.

I will say, I preferred the original 1988 cover art/design to the reworked 2009 version. The 2009 looked like hardly any effort was put into it at all.

  25. Past Masters is fine. This is a silly thing to care so much about.
I mean, what else? "The Singles" (and in small lettering, and non-LP tracks)??? Who cares.
