Brian Wilson's 75th birthday is tomorrow, the day of my radio show. I will do a birthday tribute set, but am limited to four songs per artist under the DMCA rules that govern internet-only radio stations. So which four Brian Wilson tracks and which four Beach Boys tracks should I play?

Surfer Girl - Brian wrote this as a very young teenager , possibly his first song?

When I Grow Up - oh, the irony!

God Only Knows - Classic track

Good Vibrations - previously voted best song/single

Good suggestions, but I want to play songs featuring Brian on lead vocals.

If you would like some more uncommon choices (but excellent nonetheless):

    "The Lonely Sea"
    "Let Him Run Wild"
    "You Still Believe In Me"
    "Busy Doin' Nothin'"

How about "Lay Down Burden" from Imagination.

    Great solo tracks:
    Melt Away
Love And Mercy (I like the Just Wasn't Made soundtrack version)
    Midnight's Another Day
Forever She'll Be My Surfer Girl
    Cry

I may also play a selection of Brian-produced / arranged tracks by other artists.

There is an excellent piano and organ version of this song on the No Pier Pressure deluxe edition that is, to me, the best version. @B. Bu Po Hit me up if you'd like it. It is perfect for your show.

I only suggest 1 song, Surf's Up. 1967 version if possible. Let the other 3 songs be the popular songs. Surf's Up is Brian's masterpiece.

Carl sings lead on the Surf's Up LP version, right?

Yes, for the first half of the song. Once it gets to the second half ("Dove-nested towers, the hour will strike the street..."), it's Brian. However, when all the voices jump in, Al is the one singing, "A children's song, have you listened as they play..."

If you get the version on The Smile Sessions, they placed Brian's full vocal from the demo over the original backing, so he sings lead on that version (though it's still Al singing the part I noted above; there is no difference in the second half of either version).

Yes, that's the one. And I may play the Hal Blaine Vege-tables promo session. That can be in addition to the four allowables since I'll list it under Hal Blaine and Brian Wilson.
