Paul McCartney's "Flaming Pie"

Having rediscovered Flaming Pie recently, I think it is my personal favorite of Paul's post-Beatles albums. It may not be perfect, but the sheer bulk of the album puts me in a great mood. "Great Day", "The Song We Were Singing", "Heaven On A Sunday", "Somedays", "If You Wanna"...I could go on-and-on. The jams with Steve Miller and Ringo are throwaways, but they don't bother me as much anymore.

 

Sorry but this has already been discussed on numerous other threads.. no need for another one, despite it being Paul's best ever solo album post 70's.

Great album a little too long maybe but it would be interesting to see what the track list would have looked like if it were released in the pre cd age.

For me it's a bittersweet album as his first love Linda was critically ill. Some of her nicest work adorns the booklet.
It's in his top five.

 

I agree that its Paul's best solo album post 70s. That's good enough reason for another thread in my book!!

 

Aren't some albums Paul & Linda McCartney, The Fireman, and an obscure band known as Wings?

 

I've found this album to be a perfect companion piece to Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" for reason, meaning they have a similar vibe, aesthetic and mood.

 

Much like Wildflowers it's screaming for a repress.

 

Two CD-era releases that were born for vinyl.

 

Great, great album. Probably my favorite McCartney album overall. A lot of the songs, even the uptempo ones, sound a bit wistful and nostalgic, but that's a good thing. Sort of reminds me of Carole King's "Tapestry" ... they both have a Sunday-morning vibe to them.

It's an amazing album, and one of the best he ever did. Aside from the two jam tracks, all of the songs are strong, and the production is a welcome respite after the Eighties sound of the two previous records.

I really like about half of it, rest is filler for me.

 

Work of art. Interesting to me Bob Dylan and Van Morrison also released beautiful albums the same year after what some may consider dry spells.
I remember when I discovered Somedays I played it over and over.

 

If the Beatles had stayed together in 1970, what solo tracks should have been on their next album?
Who has unfairly not been admitted to the Rock Hall?

 

I wish he hadn't included the Miller tracks, as they seem to be cut for a different album.

Anyway, "Calico Skies" is wonderful

 

Funny, I just listened to my Run Devil Run LP, and as I was putting it back, I pulled out Flaming Pie, reminding me it needs another listen.

Those two were a nice back-to-back (discounting Rushes in between) for him. His voice, while showing signs of aging in spots, was still excellent and the tunes were memorable.

The albums after that all blend together for me, so while I'm not sure it's his best post 70's work, it's the last two that I really enjoy going back to.

 

I think we said the exact same thing.

 

Track down "In the World Tonight" on DVD. It's the greatest "Paul" documentary next to Wingspan.

Includes the making of Flaming Pie and some of the best "Personal Paul" stuff I've ever seen. It's great!

 

A great album. It was the start of Paul's late career artistic resurgence.
Ranks #3 behind BAND ON THE RUN and RAM as my favorite McCartney album (just ahead of TUG OF WAR).
I think "Calico Skies" is one of the best songs Paul has ever written (including his Beatles stuff). "Little Willow" and "Some Days" are top tier as well.
I think "Young Boy" should have been the single in the US (it was in the UK) as it has "catchy pop hit" written all over it.
I absolutely love when Ringo comes in singing on "Beautiful Night". One of my favorite solo Beatles moments.
No weak tracks on this album either!

 

One of my absolute favourites. Never get tired of it. Somedays is the best song on it imo.
