Oh I know - but I was talking about an auction where there had been no automatic bids placed as there has only been 1 bidder - but yet you are able to tell that the original bidder has gone back to the auction - and set a 2nd bid - which will turn into automatic bids if anyone else places a bid on the item.

I've found it's different than me opening the bid on a $1 with a bid of $20. That would only show one bid being made - and then the next bidders would have no idea - until they bid - that I had set a higher maximum on that first bid - as my automatic bids take over.

Where as if I place a bid of $1 on a $1 opening bid - and then - I go back to the auction later - and I enter a 2nd higher bid on top of my own - people can see now there are 2 bids (or 3, or 4, if I keep going back) but the opening price will still say it is $1.

I do this on occasion to lock an item in so it must be sold - then if no one else has bid as it nears the end of the time - and I cannot be at my computer when it ends (I don't use sniping services) I will enter a 2nd bid on top of the first. People will then be able to tell they need to beat me by more than $1.

It's probably worth bidding up to the maximum you are willing to spend on an item. Forget the bids entered, unless they already exceed your maximum. If you lose, then look elsewhere. If you win with a bid well below your maximum, then great.

You only need one bid near the end of an auction to lock it in: the seller can't cancel bids even if they pay the fees.

I started using esnipe within the last year and probably will never bid any other way from now on. It can reduce the high bid on items with a limited number of bidders that want the item. In a perfect world other bidders would just put in a "high bid" and stick with it. Of course the problem is with bidiots that put in incremental bids so they will be "high bidder" long before the end of the auction. If I put first bid on an item with a starting bid of $50.00 and decide I am willing to pay up to $100.00 there will inevitably be some guy that will put in their "high bid" of $60.00... then $65.00... then $70.00 until they just give up making my high bid $75.00. If I snipe it the ending bid will only be the increment over the other bidders high bid of $60.00. I know that a lot of folks hate snipers but if you are really willing to put your real "high bid" without the need to see that you are "high bidder" on the listing, you wouldn't have a problem (other than the bidiots that want to see their current bid at the top).

I use Auction Sniper on my Android phone. Works perfectly, as long as you have service and are signed in.

Hello everyone, it is my first post. Google brings me here:wave:
I also notice the same situation when bidding . I bid quite a lot of thing, like CDs, vinyls, cameras, fountain pens, books and even stamps. Some ofr my friends and some for myself. My max bid was usually placed within 24 hours before the auction ends.
However when it was over at last few minutes I found myself cannot enter any higher amount too. There are several situations, like connection failed, session over, and even page error, etc, all by ebay.
I wondering if there was any hijacking programs that disturbed the page and prevent user from placing bids.

What country are you bidding through on eBay? It might be because of your location trying to access another international site causing delay or your firewall is holding things up because you haven't granted it direct access to the international web site.

Maybe I'm just dumb or old-fashioned, but I can't see the maximum bid feature as anything but a "Buy it Now" without the "Now" part. What's the point of making it an auction when there's literally no chance of anybody fighting over it? Whatever.

It's pretty obvious that you are not putting in large enough bids. Ebay is NOT like a conventional
auction where you can duke it out until one of you quits. It's a countdown clock and a war of nerves
all at once. I've put some pretty massive bids on items I really want and have never come close to paying
those amounts. I do have to admit that these are rarely music related, but other types of collectables,
    sometimes one of a kind.....

No, but you can use a sniping service to place your bid at the last minute, and the problem goes away. I've always had good luck with esnipe.com but there are others.

I'm a slow learner. I see "auction" and I think "auction", not "best offer with extended waiting period". I would not be complaining right now if they just changed the name.

There is no "extended waiting period", the offering has a very specific end date and time.

It took me a while to learn how to make it work for me. I also don't look to "score" on ebay. I know that their
ads reach many more people than a typical local auction would and have adjusted my strategies accordingly.
I also don't like to buy records on ebay because most sellers don't seem to know how to grade records or they
    are blatant liars........

I think you misunderstood me. I said "best offer" but I meant in the buy-it-now context. The extended waiting period is just the bidding time. At any rate, I know that eBay doesn't give a damn about any of this, they've proven time and time again that they support scalpers and will do nothing about counterfeit goods being sold, and I only use them as a last resort. I just really don't like the way they present themselves. The time to be outraged at monolithic corporations digging through my internet history to try to sell me **** is long gone, but I really wish they would say "based on your browsing history" rather than "people who viewed this particular Waterboys CD also viewed MXR guitar pedals, microwaves, and Nintendo GameCube memory cards" - all things I looked up on sites other than eBay. The way they present all this just feels really shady to me. I get that they're trying to push impulse buying, but a lot of the time I feel like I'm being led down an alleyway by a guy who might have a gun under his trench coat.

That does happen though. Maybe not on everything that's sold but I've seen bidding wars between bidders. Some have resulted in some pretty crazy prices.

Gotcha. Actually, I share many of your opinions about the general online shopping experience.
I do a lot of my browsing using VPN and private browsing settings so I don't see as much targeted
advertising as I used to. I've also learned to ignore most of the "noise" in my browser pages.

Which does duplicate the live auction experience to a degree. You just can't see your opponent.

I have come to expect the stupid advertising based on my online activity and simply ignore it. Occasionally it is humorous.

As I buyer I find eBay to be great. I buy quite a bit from there although most of it is Buy It Now stuff. I have also "won" some auctions at very good prices. Deciphering whether or not the seller knows what they are talking about, regarding records, is often a challenge. But that isn't different anywhere else on the internet. I do more business on eBay than I do on Discogs because I can see the actual item.

I disable cookies wherever possible and use ad blockers constantly, but if I searched google for tips on repairing the hinge on my refrigerator door, Amazon and eBay will never let me see the end of it. Like I said before, the time that calling this unacceptable is long, long gone now, but that doesn't make these practices any less annoying or fisht-seeming.

Just put in two bids on something I wanted and eBay didn't even register them! They don't show up in the bid history and the highest bid is still $18 lower than mine. Well if I wasn't sure then, I'm pretty confident that I ain't ever usin' that ****ing website again. What a rip.

Check to make sure there wasn't a cover bid. That is, a higher bid that is retracted at the last minute, allowing a second bidder, working cahoots, to get the item for a low price. You can see this from the bid history. Are there any retracted bids?

No. I contacted the seller and he said that there was no indication that I placed any bids. Worst of all, I considered filming it with my phone camera just in case but decided against it. Could have used that as proof. That said, it's entirely likely that the guy who won had a much higher max bid. I've already aired my grievances with that; but knowing that eBay won't process my bids is a dealbreaker. There's no use in me getting excited over something and watching it vigilantly for a week only for a **** up like this to happen. Next time I see an auction for something I want, I'm just going to throw down a bid and walk away. It's not worth all the anguish.

On the off chance that the guy who won that Church CD lot auction is reading this, can you contact me and maybe we can work out a deal for some of those?

Glad to see you changed your mind a bit. What a difference 4 hours can make.
Your weren't ever going to use eBay again when you first posted 4 hours before the quoted post.

Never heard of this, but it makes sense. People will come up with very interesting tricks to cheat the system. About a month ago, I placed too high of a bid on an item and eBay wouldn't let me retract because the bid was placed within the last 12 hours of the auction. Fortunately, I was able to win the item for a very reasonable price.

Well it has nothing to do with changing my mind about ebay and everything to do with a buy it now of something I've been after. Ebay and its decision makers can still get ****ed and it's still among my least favorite things about being alive. But enough people just don't know about Discogs yet, I guess.

  24. I always bid early and just bid what I am willing to pay for an item, if I am outbid someone is willing to pay more than I was and I will place the same bid next time. Some items will just sell for more than I will pay and I never get it but most of the time I do get what I want and usually for less than my maximum bid. Just by bidding first snipers often have to beat my bid by a specified minimum, up to $2.50 depending on price of the item, and tie goes to the first bidder. Sniping only works to get a great deal when people haven't placed a bid for what they are willing to pay, meaning never for any item I bid on.

Discogs is a nice addition to the online selling landscape but I wouldn't consider it a replacement for ebay. They coexist together like two record stores on the same street in my view. Both have positives and negatives and the disappearance of either would be detrimental to my buying and selling landscape. However, I don't sell on Discogs, only on ebay. Might sell eventually on Discogs but I've been going the auction route for the most part.

I haven't really encountered any of the issues you have with ebay so for the most part it's been very good to me in terms of giving me access to sellers.
