Ernie (the fastest milkman in the west) by Benny Hill, number one (UK) for four weeks at the end of 1971.

"(The) Rock and Roll Waltz" - Kay Starr (b. Katherine Laverne Starks).
Released December 1955 it was first Number One single by a female singer
in the rock era. It reached Number One on the Billboard Singles Chart in
1956 and stayed there for three consecutive weeks, 3 - 17 March 1956.

Sweet Sensation were O.K. winners in 1974: the dance moves and the look have dated I still like the song:

Was that a number 1 single?

    I was curious.
Number Eight on the Billboard Hot 100, Number One on the Billboard Hot R&B Sides.

I had this 45 back in the day and really like it...they reminded me a bit of the Five Stairsteps. The song has a melancholy aspect that appealed to me. It was a medium sized hit here in the States, didn't realize it had been a Number 1.

Sweet Sensation are a rare example of a REAL one hit wonder: none of their other singles charted. The band had a rather tragic history, with two members dying prematurely.

No, they were mentioning it as an example of a religiously-themed song that oldies radio plays.

Eric Records "Hard to Find 45s on CD Volume 11" has a fantastic mastering of it. It sounds exactly the way I remember it from that time.

I've always wondered about that song. In 1972 I bought a copy of it by Georgio Moroder (I think it was on Dunhill or ABC records, anyway it had a black label). Never heard about the Chicory Tip version until decades later. On top of it all Georgio Moroder became a world famous producer. You are right, he did precede Kraftwerk.

Midge Ure was probably referencing "Antmusic" which is the "other" song that could have/should have been No.1 but ended up being No.2 for 5 weeks behind Imagine just after Lennon was shot.

  14. Unless I missed it earlier in the thread, I saw no mention of "Winchester Cathedral" by the New Vaudeville Band. Hit Billboard #1 on December 3, 1966. The next week it was knocked off the top by The Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" and then it went back up to the top the following two weeks until it was knocked off by The Monkees' "I'm A Believer". I don't think I've heard "Winchester Cathedral" on the radio since that time. The song sounded old (intentionally) even back then.

It's difficult for me to come up with stuff for this thread. If it's from '64 to the early 80s, there's a good chance I own it even if it's not aired much anymore. And after I went off to college I stopped being exposed to top 40 radio much. I'd say I probably wouldn't recognize half the number one songs of the last 25 years.

Has Wonderland by Night been mentioned? My search didn't turn it up.

It's on Rhino's Have a Nice Day vol. 7. It plus Softly Whispering I Love You by the English Congregation and Joy by Apollo 100 made its purchase a no-brainer.

That was in response to religious songs played on radio. I'm a huge Beatles fan.

Love is All Around by Wet Wet Wet kept endless great songs from #1. At the end it was so embarrassing the band withdrew it.
