:righton: That was before my time! I got to know Misha Dichter from his Philips/PentaTone recordings but did not know he had recorded for RCA ...

I believe he started with RCA in the '60s, but in the 1970s he was recording with (and stayed with) Philips.

It's good. The sound is a bit diffuse, though.

I'm not familiar with that composer. What the music is like?

How cool is that! I grew up with reel-to-reel, but we didn't have any pre-recorded ones at home.

An edgier, darker Britten. The Symphony has definite echoes of Sinfonia da Requiem and the Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes--but with his own touch.

In the disc player tonight...the reviewer for Classics Today was not a fan of this recording of the Symphony of Psalms, noting that he is not fond of the extreme stereo separation of the chorus, the tendency to over spotlight individual instruments, and Solti's tempo of the 2nd movement (too slow). I would tend to agree, but the first two works, the Symphony in 3 Movements and Symphony in C are excellent.

I'm glad I spent so much time in NYC when I was younger because at this point I don't envision ever going back. Hate waiting at the tunnel for the same amount of time it took me to get to the tunnel from western NJ.

First listen to "Frederick Fennell Conducts Gershwin" performed by the Studio Orchestra on Mercury.

Not sure how properly this fits into a classical music thread. Has a 50s (recorded 1961) lounge-y feel.

CD 2 from Spotify Premium. Symphonies 4 & 5. If you like Brahms, you might like Parry.

I have three totally different versions of that concerto; John Williams, Miles Davis and another by someone who I can't for the life of me remember:o
